Chapter 1

Tess watched him as he slowly dismounted his horse. A shiver ran down her spine as she watched the muscles bunch in his back. She stood at the edge of the barn unseen by Kyle, the new trainer. He was shirtless and this caused her to get overheated. Finally when she couldn’t take anymore she turned and leaned against the barn.

She took a deep, cleansing breath, hoping her legs would move. Pushing away from the barn she started to walk back across to the house. Then a shadow came across her path. She knew instantly from the hairs standing on her neck who was casting the shadow. Slowly she turned to see Kyle propped on the side of the barn.

He tipped his hat up with a finger and smiled that sexy smile. Darling you don’t have to watch from the outside, you can come on the inside. He winked at her.

At first she was a little confused by his words, maybe it was the way he was watching her through half open eyes. I was just heading to the house and came by the open doorway… She stammered to a stop as he straightened up and started slowly toward her.

Well, did you enjoy what you saw? He stopped within a foot away from her. She had to look up to see his eyes. He was almost a foot taller than her.

I always enjoy watching the horses. She wasn’t really good at lying and it showed. Bowing her head she looked at her feet. Why did he make her so tongue tied?

He reached out and tipped her chin up with his long, tanned fingers. How old are you? His gaze raked over her with slow approval. A glint of lust shining in his eyes as he gazed at her from lowered lids.

I’m eighteen. Why? She tilted her chin up slightly showing defiance.

He laughed softly and leaned forward. Do you date anybody? He hoped she said no because he’d been watching her and he wanted her in a bad way.

She drew in a quick breath. No, I don’t. Wasn’t this what she wanted? She’d been watching him for a couple of weeks like a love sick fool. Now here he was talking to her and looking at her in a heated way, but she was at a loss for words.

What about going out with me tonight? He slowly ran his fingertips across her cheek. The light touch set them both on fire. He had to fight his instinct to back her up against the barn right there.

That would be nice. Where did you have in mind? She looked at him with a look of wonder.

He let his eyes drift over her young body and smiled. Does it really matter? His voice had a sexy tone to it that made her shiver with delight.

This set her heart in a spin, causing her to get slightly dizzy. I guess not. I was just wondering how to dress. She looked back up into his eyes.

Jeans and a t-shirt will be just fine. He looked back up at the main house. I’ll pick you up at seven.

Ok, I’ll be ready.

He winked at her and turned back toward the barn. When he turned into the barn she sank up against the barn. Oh what had she gotten herself into? She’d been following him around like a love sick puppy, so what did she expect? He was a man and here she was going on a date with him. She probably had bit off more than she could chew, but that bite would definitely be worth it.

When she got her senses back she walked to the house. As she walked into the house her heart started hammering. Looking in her closet she pulled out her new jeans and a turquoise t-shirt. She had two hours until he’d pick her up. She jumped in the shower. Normally around the ranch she wore her hair up, but tonight she left her long blonde hair down.

She told her mom she had a date. All she did was smile and go back to folding clothes. Her father wouldn’t be home until tomorrow from the sales. Her parents had always let her do what she thought was best. They’d never been strict with her so they didn’t ask about her dates.

At seven on the dot he pulled up in a new truck. She was impressed. He met her at the steps. You look great with your hair down. He whistled low as she passed him to get in the truck. He opened her door which surprised her. Most of her dates had always just left her to do that.

He climbed in the driver’s seat and started the truck. Do you like steak?

I’m from Texas so what do you think? She said in a low tone.

He looked at her and grinned. Sassy little thing aren’t you? He pulled the truck in gear and headed toward town.

They didn’t speak for a couple of miles. Finally he turned slightly to look at her. So, have you graduated yet?

I graduated in May. She kept her eyes forward. If she looked at him she’d implode. He looked too good in his dark jeans and black t-shirt which was tight enough to show every muscle.

Any plans for college? With that question she turned to look at him. That had been the one thing her parents were adamant about. They wanted her to go to college to be a Veterinarian.
