    Chapter 1

Ginger Williams sat in her car, not ready to go inside just yet. This was her job, but could she work for Chance Matthews without losing part of herself? Knowing she was being silly, she picked up her briefcase and opened the door to her car. As she took a deep breath, the scent of wood burning filled her senses. That was something she missed while living in New York City.

The house in front of her was nothing short of amazing. Chance had come a long way from rodeo king to millionaire rancher. It was hard to believe the man who’d pulled her pigtails when she was small, now was the richest rancher around. The two-story mansion was built in the Georgian style with four columns gracing the front porch, not that you’d simply call it a front porch. The outside living space that graced the whole front of the downstairs porch was filled with furniture and plants. She knew that the only reason she got the job was because of Patrick, her big brother. He and Chance had been best friends since they learned to walk.

With each step she took, her heart raced. The last time she saw Chance was at her college graduation party. Patrick had everyone in town over for a huge surprise party. They’d danced at the insistence of Patrick, but once he had her in his arms, she was lost. The look in his eyes told her that he felt the heat building between them. Without warning, he pulled away from her and stalked out of the party. She hadn’t seen him again. Every time she came home, he stayed away.

Ginger pushed the doorbell with shaky fingers. Unconsciously she reached up and pushed a stray hair from her eyes. The wait for him to answer the door was heart wrenching. Then, as the door swung open, she kept a somber look on her face, trying hard not to let him see her feelings. He was dressed in dark jeans, a white button down and a black cowboy hat. At that moment she forgot her name and why she was here. Every dream she’d had over her lifetime all came true in that one sight. It should be a sin for a man to look that good. All she wanted to do was fall at his feet and beg him to take her right there on his front porch. She mentally slapped herself.

Ginger, you’re ten minutes late and I have things to do, so let’s get this over with. Chance said with a snarl, taking her by surprise.

Sorry, I... Well... There was a wreck at the red light and traffic was backed up. Ginger stammered as she looked down at her feet. It was evident the feeling wasn’t mutual for him. The way he was glaring at her told more than words could ever say.

She’d been in love with Chance since she was a young girl. Since her parents died in a car crash when she was sixteen, Patrick had taken over raising her. With Chance being his best friend, she saw him every day. In that time, she grew fond of him, then as she got older, it went beyond fondness into a crush, but now, well...

Fine, let’s just get this started. Chance turned, leaving her standing outside the door.

Ginger straightened her spine, putting a shield over her heart so that she wouldn’t get hurt. She followed him into the main entrance which was large, complete with a double winding staircase. This is beautiful. Why would you want to change it? She said as she placed her briefcase on the side table and pulled out a pad and pencil.

Look, do you want the job or not? Chance growled.

OK, OK. Calm down. I was just making an observation. She looked up the staircase, imagining him carrying her up in his strong arms. Then she shook her head, trying to clear that image. If she was planning on getting any work done, she’d have to quit letting her mind wonder to places it didn’t have any business going. Alright, so where do you want me to start?

That’s your job. Chance said, his voice sounding somewhat nicer.

Excuse me, but Patrick said you wanted to make some changes. I need to know what you want to change. Ginger gave him a curious glance, then turned to touch the walls. Like for instance, do you want to rip down this wallpaper and maybe do a nice muted tone paint?

That’s fine. Chance crossed his arms across his chest and leaned against the side table. So, you didn’t like New York?

His question took her off guard, especially with his moodiness. It wasn’t that I didn’t like New York. I couldn’t continue to let Patrick pay for my place and well, jobs weren’t falling into my lap.

That was honorable of you, but I’m sure Patrick didn’t mind.

Maybe he didn’t, but I did. Ginger knew she had to get the subject off her time in New York because he’d see through her, Chance always had. Now, what rooms do you want redecorated?

Chance saw the change in her eyes and he meant to get to the bottom of it. But for now, he’d go along with this remodeling ruse. I want my office, master bedroom and now that you mentioned the wallpaper, we’ll add the entrance, all redecorated.

I’ve got a couple of ideas for the entrance, but I’ll need to see the office and your bedroom. On the last word, her voice went soft. She couldn’t imagine how it would feel to stand in his bedroom.

The office is down the hall. Chance turned and walked under the walkway where the stairways met.

It was beautiful as well, but she couldn’t see Chance in here. I think it’s alright, but not you. I have some ideas. Now to the bedroom.

They walked up the stairs in silence. At the top of the stairs Chance turned to the right and walked to the double doors at the end of the hall. When he opened the door, he didn’t go inside. It’s in here.

You’re not going in with me? Ginger said, finding it hard to breathe.

No, it’s all yours. I’ve got to go down to the stables to check on my new foreman. He turned on his heel and left her standing there, again.

Ginger took in the masculine bedroom, wondering why he wanted to change anything. The walls were a deep beige, with creme molding. The dark hardwood floors gleamed under her feet and were graced with beige throw rugs in several places. She walked closer to the massive king-sized
