    With a low steady rumble, the last train of the night rolled out of the station and lumbered down the track.

    The platform was deserted, except for a lone man who stood smoking a cigarette and staring off at the train as it vanished into the darkness.

    She’d left because of him. He loved her more than any woman in the world, and she loved him equally. Or did she? Oh, Jane—Jane, he cried softly. Henry Herold stood straight and tall, still watching the darkness, thinking, why, Jane? Why? But he knew why. He couldn’t offer her a life with him. He was already married and had two beautiful children. He couldn’t give up his children, and with a divorce, there was no choice. Arlene was a good mother, a wonderful homemaker, and a good wife.

    Life with Jane could have been a wonderful love story, but fate was opposed. Henry was a good-looking man, with a gentleness and kindness that was rare in most men. He had a sandy-colored hair and steel blue eyes. Although he had a very good sense of humor, there were times when he would be very stern, and as a foreman in the construction business, this was a must. He was a good man and did not want to be an unfaithful husband, but Jane was not an ordinary woman.

    It was love at first sight for both of them, and nothing could have prevented it. Their eyes would meet from across the room, and each knew what the other was thinking. Jane was everything he’d wanted for a wife, and Henry was the man she’d dreamed of all her life. He remembered the night he had said to her, Why couldn’t I have met you first? Things would be so different and uncomplicated. Now you are gone forever.
