    TAMING THE BAD BOY

No job, little money and no prospects. Jackson cursed his lack of forethought as he knocked on Sienna’s door. At the moment he needed a place to live until he could get on his feet. He almost laughed at the thought. He’d worked so hard at just getting by for the last few years that now, being in a word, ‘homeless’ had not occurred to him. There’d always been a woman ready and willing who had gladly taken him in and supplied all of his needs, but that was getting old.

Sienna was the catalyst for making him realize he was wasting himself and his God given talents. He could sing like nobody’s business. He’d always known that but hadn’t done much about it. More than likely his parent pushing him in that direction had turned him totally against a singing career. He could sing Sinatra as easily as he did Tom Jones. But it was his rendition of R&B and soul music that made people pause. If he had a dollar for every time someone had questioned him concerning his parentage then proceeded to probe him with intense gazes, he’d be a rich man.

Jackson laughed softly as he thought of his stock answers to the question. "What… a man with blue eyes isn’t allowed to sing R&B? That always made the person doing the asking stop, give him another look and try to give a plausible excuse for their rudeness.

He wouldn’t lie; he knew his voice had something to do with the number of Black women he’d dated. They thought he was an enigma, he on the other hand couldn’t understand why people wanted to appoint race to the sound of music. While he enjoyed the confusion, it puzzled him also. What did it matter what sounds came from his throat?

As far as women went, more likely than not the woman would get around to mentioning that she liked the color of his eyes. He’d had every color of blue described to them that was contained in the largest box of crayons. To him they were plain old blue. Finally he heard the distinct click of heels, then Sienna’s door opening.

    GOD, it’s him.

Nikki. She had to be the one to open the door, he thought and groaned inwardly. Out of all of Sienna’s friends he and Nikki were like oil and…anything. They just didn’t get along. It was all Jackson could do not to turn tail and run. He wished that he were even the tiniest bit clairvoyant. If so, he would have chosen a better time to grovel for a place to stay.

Perhaps he would have returned home like a whipped puppy with his tail between his legs. Perhaps he would have endured the laughter from his mother and the disdain from his father that he’d not had his game tight enough, that some woman had gotten the better of him. Or perhaps he’d have thought more seriously about getting a job and taking care of his own needs.

None of that mattered at the moment. He’d run out of money and the hotel he’d been staying at was not accepting his good looks or his voice in lieu of payment. He had no choice but to ask Sienna to allow him to live with her for a short time.

Nikki, if you don’t mind I came over to see Sienna.

    She’s busy.

    Are you the security guard?

That’s pretty funny, we should have thought of that one. What do you want Jackson? Sienna is done with you.

If there’d been the slighted chance that using charm on Nikki would have worked, Jackson would have given it his best try. But the woman was immune to his charms. Taking in a deep breathe he narrowed his eyes and counted to ten as he slowly let out the breath. I need to talk to her.

Talking to Nikki was useless. She’d often told him she wouldn’t bother to spit on him if he were on fire. He’d laughed when she’d said it. Now it didn’t seem quite as funny. For a long moment he held her gaze. This was crazy. Nikki was holding the door open a crack and Jackson could suddenly hear a lot of feminine voices inside. Shit, he couldn’t have chosen a worst time, he thought as he gave a half turn intending to walk away. That was the moment Nikki apparently knew his intent and reversed her decision pulling him into the crowded apartment.

The scent of incense and sweet-smelling candles produced a slight haze in the room. What were these women up to? When laughter burst out instinct warned him it was aimed at him. Well, he was in the apartment now; he might as well ask Sienna for the favor he’d braved Nikki’s rancor to ask.

Scanning the room he didn’t see her anywhere. There was no way he was asking Nikki or any of the women in the room where Sienna was. A quick glance at the laughing women made
