    Investigate Me - Tamar Bryce

    One

    What am I doing here?

Sondra pushed a stray strand of black hair back into place, smoothing it towards her bun. She was dressed in her best no-nonsense black slacks and blouse. Her heels tapped along the marble floors as she headed towards his office.

Jake Miller. He was a billionaire who had made his fortune in architecture. Every building in the city had been designed by him and he was coveted around the world. Of course, his background was supposedly filled with indiscretions. A new failed relationship here, a rumor of drug use there. Through it all he’d won himself the title of Seattle’s Billionaire Bad Boy.

Sondra wasn’t impressed. The things she valued above all else were order, responsibility and calm. Jake was the opposite of those things. He liked to do what he wanted when he wanted.

She stopped at his receptionist’s desk. I have a 9:45 with Mr. Miller.

You’re early, she said, almost impatiently. You’ll have to wait.

Sondra chuckled, rested her hands on the woman’s desk and leaned forward. I informed Mr. Miller that I would be early when he made the appointment. If he can’t meet me now, I’m leaving for other business.

The blonde seemed to clench her teeth, but she dialed his number. As Sondra waited, she looked around the expensive office. Everything was glass and marble. She had to admit, it looked nice, but it still wasn’t her taste. She preferred something comfy and simple over the lavishness that Jake seemed to inspire.

Mr. Miller will see you now.

Sondra woke up from her daydream. Thank you.

She insisted she could find the office herself as she headed towards the glass. As she reached for the chrome handle, a woman walked out of the room with a grin on her face. Sondra gazed after her. The woman almost looked familiar.

Come on in, a deep voice called from the office.

Sondra stepped inside, closing the door behind her. When she turned around, she froze. Jake Miller. He looked better than the photographs. The man was tall and blond with dazzling, dark-blue eyes. He wore dark jeans and a button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He cracked a crooked grin at her.

Hey, you must be Sondra Florence. He extended a hand which she shook firmly. I’m sure you know who I am.

Of course. We did speak just the other day.

We did? Oh, right, he said with a nod. Sorry, my brain is full of projects and meetin’s these days.

Sondra raised her eyebrow at the change of his accent. Where are you from?

He waved a hand to a seat across from his desk. Texas, originally. You can hardly tell anymore, unless I’m nervous or angry. Neither of which happens that often.

Interesting, she said with a nod. Well, let’s discuss business.

You have freckles. He motioned with a pen towards her nose.

Sondra covered her face out of instinct with one hand. Immediately, she regretted it. She’d hated her freckles growing up, along with her kinky black curls and her acne. Now, the kinky curls
