He's Opposing Counsel - Tamar Bryce

    One

    That bastard!

Jackie slammed her briefcase down on her desk. Instead of sitting down, she paced. Her heels tapped loudly on the wooden floors as she tried to calm herself down. Who did he think he was?

After years of law school and working for a successful firm, Jackie was used to losing and winning her fair share of cases. Normally, when she went up against someone else, she conquered them quickly and efficiently, but not today. No, because today she’d gone up against Sam West.

She could still see his smug little smile. The mischievous grin was permanently etched onto her brain. He was one of the few who’d ever been able to beat her and make her feel like an incompetent ass in the process. She clenched her fist, sharp nails digging into her palms.

The sharp rapping of knuckles on her door partially brought her out of her anger. She called for the knocker to come in. Deon, her assistant, stepped in. His brows were furrowed, concern on his face as he watched her continue to pace.

    I heard about court.

I’m sure everyone has by now, she mumbled.

    You’ll get him next time.

Jackie scoffed. Unlikely. He’s a menace, she spat as the pacing picked up. He made me look like an idiot.

Deon sighed. Please, I’m begging you, don’t start another feud. You both nearly killed yourselves last time.

If something starts, it won’t be because of me.

Jackie sighed. Her legs and toes ached inside of the pointy black heels. She kicked them off of her stockinged feet before she wearily sank into her black, leather chair. She sunk down, letting herself sulk.

Are you going to be like this all afternoon?

Are you going to be bitchy all afternoon? She grumbled.

Deon scoffed. Tell you what? I’ll go get you a coffee and something to eat while you change that attitude.

She watched him flounce out of the door. Sighing, she leaned forward to bury her face in her arms. Jackie wasn’t used to defeat, and it was even worse when it was Sam.

Pushing herself up, she ran her fingers through long, brown hair. She needed to get out of the office, even if only for a little bit. There was a library a block or two away that she liked to bury herself in whenever she was having a particularly rough day. She was sure her boss wouldn’t mind.

Reaching into a backpack, she pulled out a pair of black sneakers. She pulled the stockings off of her legs first, revealing smooth brown skin underneath the black pencil skirt. Taking off her jacket, she adjusted the white blouse she wore before she grabbed her laptop and headed out.

On the elevator down, she texted Deon asking him to bring her coffee to the library. She would apologize when she saw him, but for the moment, she just needed to be out of the building. As she stepped out of the elevator, something hard collided with her making her
