Charlotte had been awake since the early hours of the morning, replaying the previous evening’s events and trying to decide her next move.

Last night she had been ready to confront Becky, but hours of tossing and turning, imagining the various ways this could play out, had convinced her she was better off speaking to Jack directly. He could then decide how to deal with Becky – she was his problem, after all.

Charlotte took longer than usual to get dressed, not feeling her usual enthusiasm for the day ahead. She’d feel better once she’d spoken to Jack.

She pictured him calling Becky into his office and demanding to know what was going on, Becky’s icy demeanour crumbling – Charlotte certainly didn’t intend to be there when that happened.

When she arrived at the hotel, she was surprised to discover Becky wasn’t at her desk. For a moment, she feared she was in Jack’s office.

‘Morning, looking for me?’ It was Jack, standing in the doorway to his office, and he was alone.

Charlotte took a measured breath and nodded. ‘I’d like to talk to you about something.’

‘Sounds serious. You aren’t throwing in the towel, are you? I know I can be a pain sometimes, but I do appreciate what you’re doing.’

Charlotte shook her head. ‘No, it’s not that. It’s about Becky.’

‘Becky?’ Jack frowned. ‘What about her?’

‘Is she around?’

‘No, she has this morning off. What’s going on, Charlotte? Has Becky upset
