    The Inheritance

Sometimes we make the best decisions for all the wrong reasons. Jack Sloan wants his inheritance no matter what he has to sacrifice to get it. Can marrying for money give this business man the kind of happy life he never craved? Find out in The Inheritance when Jack Sloan and Shalon Hillcrest collide on the ultimate change of life bridge.

    Chapter One

Jack Sloan looked at the woman who could save his world. Brown as molasses, hair as curly plump as possible, a delicious looking set of midnight brown almond shaped eyes and that made her a woman he would take to bed for one go and walk away easily from. Jack wasn’t looking for long-term because long-term wasn’t real, not in business, not in love, not in anything. But this woman was different. This woman had the one thing he needed to save his world. She needed him and he needed her.

Look I don’t know why you had me dragged up here. I didn’t even use the pen in that stupid room. I didn’t get the water or anything else out the stainless steel fridge. I took nothing.

Jack wasn’t sure he liked her mouth but he still needed her. She walked into the hotel scraping pennies for a room for the night clearly too economically blind to realize his hotel costs thousands per night not pennies. Surely she had to see the marble halls, the crystal chandeliers, the solid stone front desk she was dumping all her coins over and the high class men and women walking in and out of the establishment dressed to the nines. When Jack got the call on the issue of some woman nearly in tears and trying to get a room for the night without a dime he had to make a choice of let Buck the security guard from hell take her out or let her stay. He wasn’t about charity. He didn’t do charity.

She’s still counting her pennies, sir. She’s crying about her boyfriend now.

Ex boyfriend. Ex stupid lying cheating Army man who promised me everything, told me he was now back from the warzone, told me to come to New York and we could continue; change splattered on the counter as she breathed in tears. Then I get here, he said I could stay with him in all his lying emails I come here and he’s married to some cute little Asian girl and suddenly he doesn’t remember that I’m carrying his baby. The jerk. I didn’t come here with cash and the ticket cost more than a waitress of a dying restaurant can afford so I emptied everything to come start our legal life together and the bastard walked away not even caring about his promises and our baby. Never again in my life will I trust a bastard with short hair, brown eyes, green suits and perfectly manicured nails.

The woman had slammed something down on the counter. Would that be enough for one night? I can sleep in the laundry room.

Jack’s lips had twisted into a grin. Angry, sharp attitude and broke—that’s what he needed.

Give her the best room we have available and have one of the men walk her up. He had ordered Olivia McPhee his day reservationist built like a gem with the brain of a saint and heart as fickle as the morning sun before the storm. Olivia had always had the bleeding heart for women though. Had the person in front of her been a man she would have called security not him.

You will need a room for that baby. I can do that for you. That’s too many pennies for me to count up though, Jack had heard the swiping sending the coins into a crystal canister. Take these up with you and I’ll have somebody bring up penny holders for you.

Thank you. He heard more sniffling.

    What’s your name miss?

    Shalon. Shalon Hillcrest.

That’s very pretty, Olivia had uttered her words and Jack was sure she had a fake smile caressing her lips too because Olivia rarely liked a unique name and Shalon was above the line of unique.

No it’s not. It’s harder to explain than hell but at least my mom didn’t go with my father’s choice. Rudella. Who names their child Rudella?

Olivia had laughed. I hear you. Shalon is definitely better.

The pass of the key and the request for Logan to escort Shalon to the Windsor room, the best room that was free for at least two nights before it had to be cleaned again so the person already scheduled to be their checked in would at least give that spitting fire broken heart a night of sleeping peace before he set his deal on the table.

Jack had laughed to himself. I win money suckers. I win. While he wasn’t the count his chickens before the eggs hatched kind of man he sure as hell was the best deal sealer in the family, in the state and in his mind in the country.

Jack had waited the night but when the call came in that Miss Shalon Hillcrest was checking out early to hitch her way back to Oklahoma he had Buck escort her up to his office. She hadn’t gone kicking and screaming and he figured that was because she didn’t want to embarrass herself more than she did yesterday with the penny counting.

She now stood before him looking angry as a horse forced to mate with an enemy stallion but he didn’t care about that. This
