    THE DO OVER

Serena was barely in her bed before the phone rang. She didn’t need to be a psychic to know it would be Ross. The tingling in her belly was a sure fire giveaway. Lifting the phone she smiled.

Serena, Ross began. I just wanted to tell you again how sorry I am that our date turned into a big bust.

Come on you know you’ve been laughing about this the same as I have. I’m fine, Ross.

I wanted everything to be perfect. I planned it out to the smallest detail, and then to be derailed by a skunk, I’m embarrassed.

Did he really think she hadn’t heard the slight chuckle in his voice? Now that the crisis was over and she’d gotten out of her panic mode she was seeing the humor in the situation. She thought she’d put his mind at ease already, but what the heck, why not repeat the words if they would make Ross feel better.

Have you ever heard that old expression that when humans make plans God laughs? Serena snickered. I guess we really gave God a good laugh didn’t we? You put so much work into the night. I’ll never forget it as long as I live. And your friends. She stopped for a moment and thought of all they’d done to help Ross make the evening magical for her.

You’ve got very good friends. I like them, all of them, even the ones I’ve yet to meet. I was serious when I said I wanted to have them over.

Glad to hear that. They’re really anxious to get to know you. I guess we’ll have to make sure Jules is there also. Even though I know she’s going to let me have it. I’m now regretting not having listened to her. He sighed. She did warn me not to take you camping.

There was nothing wrong with the idea, Ross. Jules was wrong about that.

Oh please. You were complaining the entire time after you forced me to ruin my surprise.

Just until I saw all the work you’d done. No man has ever gone to so much trouble to ensure I had a good time.

Yeah, and look how that turned out.

If you don’t stop being such a baby and whining about tonight I think I’ll just go to sleep.

Ross laughed. Believe me; I have a right to complain. If things had gone as I’d planned we’d be sleeping together right now.

We may have shared the sleeping quarters, but that was all we were going to share. For God’s sake, Ross, this was a first date.

You’re the only one who believes that. We’ve been dating for months. You know how much I want you. And if I’m not mistaken, you feel the same about me.

Ross, grow up. You’re behaving like a horny little boy. How many times do I have to tell you that I don’t jump in and out of bed with a man?

I heard you each and every one of the hundred times you told me. By the way, I’m not just any man, Serena. I’m the special man you told Jules you’d been looking for. I heard you when you said the man would have to be special. And you think I’m pretty special.

Did I use those words? More importantly, did I use your name?

You didn’t have to. I know you, and I know if you went to the trouble that you did for our date, you think I’m special to you, or that I could be. Are you at least going to admit that?

For a long moment Serena refused to answer then she sighed. I do have feelings for you, Ross, but I believe in taking it slow. I’ve had feelings for several men, but I’m not attached, am I? Just think about that fact for a moment.

    You were waiting for me.

His words made her smile. A tingle of excitement ran over her body. Perhaps, I do think you have a couple of special qualities. I will admit that I did put more effort into our date than I normally do.

"I don’t think you’ve ever put less than
