    Chapter One

Lexi slowed the truck almost to a stop as the snow began to fall harder. She’d left D.C. only two hours earlier, headed to a small chalet in West Virginia. Christmas wasn’t the same anymore for her. Now all she wanted to do was get away from the crowds and late night parties of the city. She just needed the solitude of being alone.

For a moment, she thought it had lightened up, but the storm unleashed its full fury. Great, just great. Now what?

Her frustration heightened as her visibility lessened by the minute. All she needed was a little longer and she’d be in her little chalet by the lake. Leaning forward she tried to see the road ahead, but it was getting difficult. The snow was so heavy that her headlights seemed to reflect off the snow, almost blinding her.

The snow plows wouldn’t be on this road for a while, so she had to push forward. It took her thirty minutes to get ten miles. She pulled over to the side of the road to look at the GPS. It was only a couple of miles to the road that the chalet was on.

Hopefully she’d make it before darkness settled in. Slowly she pulled back onto the road. At least the road wasn’t completely covered. The temperatures had been above freezing during the day so the snow melted slightly, but now it was starting to stick.

A deer darted in front of her, causing her to swerve, then slide into the ditch. She jerked the truck into reverse, but it only spun. Hitting the steering wheel, she opened the door as the cold air hit her like a hard wall.

She checked the navigator again, only a mile to the road. Her place was just half mile down it. Grabbing her gloves, purse and phone, she closed the door. Surely, she could make it a mile and a half in the snow. It was just straight and to the left.

Lexi pulled her coat tight around her as she walked in the direction of the road ahead. The cold was bitter and the snow mixed with ice hurt hitting her face. She held her head down slightly to keep it from directly hitting her. It was a lot worse than she’d expected. Now she was beginning to think this wasn’t the brightest of ideas.

The wind blew the snow around her as she walked. The sound was deafening, with the howling wind and swishing trees making it so didn’t hear the four-wheel drive truck coming up behind her.

A voice somewhere behind her made her stop. Had she imagined it? Listening she heard it again, but closer. Turning around the headlights shined in her eyes.

Lady, what are you doing out in this storm? The man came running up to her.

My truck... stuck... a little way back. Her teeth chattered as she spoke, making it difficult to form words.
