Introduction
Imagine that everything is right in your world…You have an incredible family, you love your job and you are the epitome of health. One day you awaken to an annoying little buzzing in your right ear. While you notice it, it doesn’t impact your life too much and you don’t think about it again throughout the day.
That night, as you are getting ready for bed and turning out the side lamp, the noise returns. This time something feels different. The noise is louder and feels stronger. However, you don’t think too much about it as you lay your head on the pillow, feeling utterly exhausted.
As you try to relax, the noise gets louder. You turn over and lay on the alternate side of your head where the ear is experiencing the buzzing. The more you try to relax, the louder the noise becomes.
Frustrated, you turn on the television and distract yourself, finally drifting off into a restless sleep. When you wake in the morning, you feel sluggish; nonetheless you trudge out of bed and get ready for your day. You don’t experience any more buzzing until that night as you turn out the side lamp and are preparing to go to sleep. The buzzing has returned. Exasperated, you again turn on the television, however this time you are unable to distract yourself from the loud noise. You try reading a book; but you are unable to concentrate.
Finally, you get out of bed and drink a glass of warm milk aware of the buzzing with every step you take. After a few hours of increasingly becoming more frustrated, you finally fall into another fitful sleep and awaken to the external buzzing of your alarm. Feeling totally exhausted, you drag yourself out of bed and prepare for a long day.
This time when you are getting ready for bed, you are aware of the buzzing in your ear. You are aware of it as you brush your teeth and wash your face. It is present as you change out of your clothes and into your pajamas.
The buzzing seems to get louder as you go through your house and turn off the lights, televisions and fans. By the time you crawl into bed, the buzzing is so loud that it feels as though your head will explode. You know you will not be able to wind down and relax enough to fall asleep so you don’t even try.
You are really beginning to worry. What is going on? Suddenly
