Shelley Hitz
Shelley Hitz is an award-winning and international best-selling author. However, she gives all the glory to God for what He is doing through her life. As she likes to say, “God is the author, I am simply the pen.” Shelley has been ministering alongside her husband, CJ, since 1998 and her main passion is to share God’s truth and the freedom in Christ she has found with others. She does this through her books, websites and speaking engagements. She is also the co-owner of BodyandSoulPublishing.com where she shares free Christian books on her blog, owner of Self-Publishing-Coach.com where she helps authors get published and noticed and co-founder of CrossReads.com where Christian readers and authors meet. The main reason Shelley writes and publishes Christian books is to share her testimony, use the gift of teaching God has given her and bring glory to God. Ironically, she never dreamed of being a published author and English was one of her worst subjects in school growing up. However, God is now using her weaknesses for His strength to impact many for eternity (2 Corinthians 12:9). She is humbled and amazed that He chooses to use her and her life goal is to keep her eyes fixed on Christ, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2). Shelley’s openness and vulnerability as she shares her own story of hope and healing through her books will inspire and encourage you.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I would highly recommend this book. While a lot of what is stated isn't new to me, it's presented in an easy-to-read and relatable manner. There's a chapter on forgiving yourself as well, which I really was encouraged by.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Forgiveness Formula C.J. and Shelley Hitz teaches you how to use God’s Math for true forgiveness of others and yourself. The Bible is full of underlying meanings and many times it is hard to understand how the verses and their meanings apply to our lives. Wonder no more. This book will help you to understand about forgiveness through use of real life examples, relational Bible verses and plain but detailed and easy to understand explanations of what those verses mean and how they apply to you and your life. After reading this book, I came away with an understanding of forgiveness that I have never had. Thank you Shelly and CJ for writing this book and writing it in such a way that gave me several of those “light bulb” moments.

Forgiveness Formula
Finding Lasting Freedom in Christ
by CJ and Shelley Hitz
"Unlike so many Christian authors, CJ and Shelley Hitz write like real people. They are not finished products offering guaranteed solutions, but rather ‘works in progress’ who are still working through some of life's most vexing problems, and who are willing to share what they are learning along the way. To read their book is to meet two very thoughtful new friends, who are both willing and able to help."
--Bart Campolo, Founder Mission Year
"CJ and Shelley open their lives up in a way that both makes you want to keep reading and relates to all of us in one way or another. No matter what situations you have faced or will face in life, the Biblical principles in Forgiveness Formula I understand this is a quote, but I recommend clarifying that this is –a previous book or was this the original title? Or a segment or subtitle of this one. will help point to the full life God intended for us all."
--David Todd, Ministry Coordinator, Findlay Area Youth for Christ
"Tragedy to triumph? Grief to gratitude? Shelley & CJ's touching transparency fleshed out to me ‘It’s possible!’ There is hope!"

Introduction
I (CJ) used to hate running with a passion. I just couldn’t see the point unless I was running with a ball in my hands. I looked at this sport
as a legal means of torture and punishment. I loathed that burning sensation in my lungs, the lactic acid build up in muscles throughout my body, and the exhaustion and fatigue I felt hours after crossing a finish line.
Wanna hear something wild? Now I absolutely LOVE running with a passion, go figure! You might even say I’ve become somewhat of a running addict. Do I still experience the burning sensation in my lungs? Yep. How about the lactic acid build up in my muscles? Affirmative. And the exhaustion and fatigue? They still show up at times as well.
So what’s the difference you might ask? I’ve simply learned to embrace these enemies
as things that will help me grow stronger as a runner and enable me to push harder than I did before.
Still, there are some days where it seems more difficult to stay motivated than others. February 12, 2009 was one such day. Once I finally got myself out the door, I soon realized this would be no easy eight-mile training run. Coming off a nasty chest cold didn’t help either. Two words: wheezing and hacking. Look them up in Webster’s and see what you come up with. Though the local weather man said it was thirty degrees outside, the wind chill factor made it feel like low twenties. During most of the run, this wind gusted up to forty mph, hitting me from the side and head-on with such ferocity it seemed as if all eleven guys on the Pittsburgh Steelers defense were lining up to take shots at me from all angles!
Not only was the wind a factor, but two miles in I began encountering some hills I wasn’t expecting in the area of Michigan my wife Shelley and I were visiting. Strong wind combined with hills? This was too good to be true!
One thing that has helped me stay motivated on tough days like these is being signed up for upcoming races. I’m a person who enjoys setting race day goals and then putting in the training necessary in order to see those goals achieved. I knew the physical pain and agony my body was going through as I endured this day of wind resistance and hill training would be nice to have in the bank when it came time to race in less than a month.
And so it is in this journey we call Life. Part of being human in this world we inhabit means we endure pain, struggle, and resistance in the physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual realms. How each person chooses to deal with that pain varies from one person to another. And though none of us would sign up to endure these strong winds,
if we’re honest, we can look back on our lives and see that these things play a role in shaping us into who we are today (for better or for worse).
We have a myriad of answers, remedies and quick fixes that sometimes work to dull the pain in the short-term but never work over the long-term. Some of these things include chocolate, coffee, alcohol, drugs, sex, TV, pornography, video games, movies, shopping, recreation, self-injury and even suicide. And the list goes on...
The book you’re now reading is written by two broken and fragile human beings who are far from perfect. We’ve attempted to numb our own pain with many of the things on that list above without any lasting success.
Neither are we experts who decided to write down information from our vast stores of knowledge
with the purpose of making you, the reader, feel like a gnat.
We simply want to share some things that made ALL the difference regarding how we dealt with and continue to deal with pain and loss in our own lives. We hope you’ll see us as two hungry beggars who found some bread and now want to point others to that bread. By the way, Jesus did say he’s the Bread of Life.
Shelley and I believe every reader can benefit from what we share in these pages, whether you’ve endured varying levels of pain or struggle in your own life or you know someone who has. It’s our prayer that God uses this book as a tool to bring healing, hope and a newfound freedom to people from all walks of life.
For those of you who consider yourselves to be followers of the teachings of Jesus, we hope and pray you’re strengthened in your faith and challenged to live out those teachings in new ways. And for those of you who still have many unanswered questions about this Jesus, we encourage you to continue exploring at your own pace while reading the stories of two fellow travelers.
Maybe you’ve been searching for that formula that will help you make sense of your life. Come, join us as we explore the Forgiveness Formula.

Mathematics 101
By CJ Hitz
Chapter 1
The Greatest Mathematician
Do you recognize any of the following names? Earl Nightingale, Zig Ziglar, John Maxwell, Tony Robbins, Richard Simmons, Deepak Chopra, Lou Holtz, Oprah Winfrey. If you do, you know there’s one common theme in this list…motivation!
Whether you agree or disagree with their viewpoints and methods, these folks have been known around the world as some of the most inspiring and motivational people of our day. From their best-selling books and CDs to their highly rated TV shows, these movers and shakers have certainly had success in getting people off their couches and into the game of life.
While this is merely a short list, would any list of motivational speakers be complete without mentioning a guy by the name of Matt Foley, played by Chris Farley on Saturday Night Live? From his use of props, including flattening living room coffee tables by falling on them, to instructing teenagers on the ills of smoking doobie,
most would agree that this man who lived in a van down by the river
knew how to motivate in a style all his own.
Was Jesus Motivational?
In the summer of 2000, I (CJ) realized in a way like never before that Jesus Christ was more than just a motivational
speaker. He wasn’t simply a good moral teacher
as some have described him. He wasn’t merely inspirational
as many believe him to be. The word that describes the way I began to see Jesus that summer was…brilliant. In my eyes he became the most brilliant mathematician who ever lived-not because of the elaborate formulas he came up with like Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein. In the most authentic way, I discovered that this Jesus of Nazareth knew 2,000 years ago and he still knows today what adds up to a FULL life. You might even say that I experienced more freedom as a human being than I ever had in my previous twenty-seven years.
CJ’s Story
It was that summer of 2000 that I would meet for the first time my stepdad. You see, my parents’ marriage crumbled after twenty-six years, ending in divorce in the summer of 1999.
Some Background
You need to know that I grew up in a household where both my parents loved me very much. My dad worked hard to provide for his family at a nearby plywood mill, the same one he’s been employed at for over thirty-eight years. He worked countless hours of overtime in order to buy my brother and me the extras we took for granted many times. My mom was a stay at home mom. She was (and still is) an outstanding seamstress who made many articles of clothing for us through the years. Both of my parents made every effort to attend the many sporting events we were part of, many times driving three-plus hours each way in order to get there. They provided a loving home for Jason and me and gave us as many advantages as possible growing up. We weren’t wealthy, but we weren’t dirt poor either. We had everything we needed.
My Reaction? Anger
I first found out that my parents’ marriage was falling apart in May of 1998, only three months before my own wedding day with Shelley. Kind of ironic that one marriage was falling apart while another one was just beginning.
It would be just over two years from the time I was given this news before Shelley and I would meet my new stepdad (mom was remarried in December 1999) and I would need every second of those two years to undergo a true transformation on the inside.
You see, I found out that my stepdad pursued a relationship with my mom, a married woman.
I realize that my mom and dad’s marriage didn’t fall apart overnight. I realize there
