1. I am the bread of life (John 6:35, 48)
2. I am the light of the world (John 8:12; 9:5)
3. I am the door (John 10:7,9)
4. I am the good shepherd (John 10:11,14)
5. I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)
6. I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)
7. I am the true vine (John 15:1)
The Apostle John is well-known for his use of “sevens” – both in his gospel and in his apocalyptic letter, Revelation. For example, John only records seven miracles of Jesus before His resurrection, and Revelation has seven letters to seven churches along with seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven scrolls. So, it shouldn’t surprise us that in his gospel, John highlights seven “I am” statements from Jesus.
The Yahweh connection
Everyone says “I am”. I am tired. I am hungry. I am irritated. So, what’s the big deal about Jesus using the phrase?
Jesus was purposefully making (Exo 3:14). We refer to “I AM” as the covenant name of God for His chosen people.
