Prelude:
It has been three years since the attacks on the planet. Everything has quieted down and it’s making some of the people on Earth not sure what was going on. Maglor has left the planet and headed back into space. Shadow returned to the new station in Alaska with two new members. Shard and Nightstar decided that they would stay on earth to help out.
Shadow was happy that they decided not to leave and he had started working with them to help strengthen their powers. Mark and Mary sit in Hunter’s room waiting for him to recover. Tim and Zak where in one of the new rooms that Shadow help build, working on new weapons.
Everyone on the planet started to come out of hiding and back to work, some were still a little scared but they too managed to come out into the open. Shadow watched as Shard and Nightstar worked in the room that he had made for them to practice, he was amazed on how well they controlled their powers at such a young age. Still there was something in the back on his mind that was starting to trouble him. He couldn’t figure out why Maglor had left the planet as quick as he had come there. He felt that there was something that was not right and it was starting to eat away at him. Shadow stood up and told them that their tests were over and for them to take a break. Shard and Nightstar smiled and where happy that they were doing well. As they left the room, Shadow started to get a feeling that something bad was about to happen and he didn’t know if he would be able to stop it. He knew once Hunter had recovered than he would be ok, but for now, if they do get attacked again, he didn’t know if Shard and Nightstar would be ready.
Chapter One:
It was really bright to be so early in the morning here in New York. Outside everyone was returning to work and outside playing. The sky was nice and blue and it was starting to get cold out as well. The news had said it would be getting colder for the upcoming weekend.
Casey reached over and turned off the alarm and sat up. Looking over she saw her husband still sleeping and she climbed out of bed slowly. Walking into the bathroom, turning on the water, she then stepped into the shower. Opening the closet door, she looked for something to wear. While she was looking, she felt a pair of hands reached around her. She leaned back on him and then asked what he would like for breakfast. Chuck and Casey had been together through the whole thing with the creatures and survived. They had planned to get married but waited until now. They both were happy and two peas in a pod.
Casey worked down at a local market shop and Chuck was a news rep. Sometimes their hours cross so they don’t get to see each other that much, but they were in love and no matter what, nothing could keep them apart. After breakfast was done, Casey cleaned up the kitchen even though Chuck said she didn’t have too. She kissed him and then looked for her keys. Chuck finished his coffee and walked up behind her at the front door.
Don’t stay out too long, and you better take a coat.
Chuck said, and he covered her with kisses.
I know, I just don’t think it’s going to get that cold so soon.
She said back.
Chuck stood next to the door and watched as she got in her car and drove off. She waved good-bye and then turned around the next corner. Chuck sat down in the kitchen and poured himself another cup of coffee. He opened the paper and started reading what was new in the news. He was so glad that they didn’t live in the city. Casey pulled into the parking garage and then headed to the elevator. Once the doors opened she was now back down on the street. She pulled out her keys and unlocked the door. Once she was inside, she started to get the coffee ready and the pastries out of the fridge. While she was taking them out of the package she noticed that the papers were being delivered and walked over to open the door.
Good Morning Mrs. Mathews.
Good Morning Sam, what’s new today?
I’m afraid not much, but at least it’s safe to come outside these days.
He said back.
Would you like a cup of coffee?
She asked.
Well, sure why not.
He said with a smile.
Down town New York in the subway tunnels, people were working on getting them up and running again. Luke Mansfield was the lead man on the project. The subway was still in need of repair and it was up to Luke and his team to get going once more.
How’s it going?
Luke asked.
Well, the tracks are still in place, but some of the cars that are down a ways are off the tracks.
Chase said.
Luke had put together the best team he could to get this job done. Chase, Kyle, and Rich are the best he could find in three years and also the only ones that would come down here.
With those cars off the tracks, how are we going to get them back on?
Luke asked.
Chase had to think about this one; because there was no way they could get anything big enough down there to help them. He figured that they would use chains and winches to get the job done. Luke told him that was the best they could do down there and to get started. Chase nodded and headed down the tracks to the others.
It was dark down there because of the lights being out, but Kyle was working on them at the time. He would soon have them up and running in no time. Luke was happy that everything was going as planned.
Casey sat down for a moment while she could and started to read the mornings paper. She flipped through the pages and found something that caught her eye.
Subway system would be up and running by the end of the next year.
She read out loud.
Casey heard the door ring as it opened and she turned around. Welcome, and what can I do for you today?
She asked.
The two that walked in sat down at table and ordered. Casey headed over to the counter and started getting their order ready. She was so glad to see people out and about again. This made her feel good inside and happy that her business was starting to pick up again.
Here you go two beagles and two coffees.
Thanks, um could I get a packet of strawberry jam as well?
The Man asked.
No problem.
Chuck was watching TV when his phone rang. He reached over and answered it, and found that he had to head to work on his day off. He told the person on the other end that he would be in as soon as he could.
Damn it, that figures on my day off.
He said to himself.
Chase and Rich were down next to one of the sub-cars trying to get in to move.
I think we’re going to need more chains.
Chase yelled out.
How many do you think we’ll need to get this hunk of metal up onto the tracks?
Rich asked.
You know bring whatever we have left.
While Chase waited for Rich to return, he started looking around for anything else that would help. Walking along, he turned his flashlight towards the next part of the wall.
Hello? What is this?
As he got closer he saw that there was a huge hole in the wall and he decided to check it out. Rich walked up to the truck and pulled out the rest of the chains they had. Luke walked up behind him and asked what he was doing.
This may take longer than we had hoped.
What’s the problem?
Luke asked.
Well, the cars are too heavy for the chains we have and they keep letting go.
Luke knew this was going to take a while to get up and running again, but he had his orders from the Mayor.
"Do what you can; if
