    The Dream

The dream was always the same.  Jack could smell the musty night air as he stood silently in the darkness.  There was a dim light in the distance and as he walked toward it, he heard the sound. It was muffed at first, like the sound of his own heartbeat in his ears. Then, as he drew closer to the light, the sound amplified until it was an ear piercing thump, thump, thump, in perfect rhythm. It was the persistent hum of some sort of machine and it was terrorizing his senses.

The light shone down from the side of a large brick building. It was a small, non-descript fixture that illuminated a set of concrete steps leading to a shiny red door. Jack approached the door with caution as the pounding noise violated his nervous system and gave him the urge to vomit. The world was a black void with only one light source and it pointed to the knob on the red door.

Jack reached tentatively for the knob. He paused when his fingers made contact, then he slowly twisted. His hand slid around the knob as if it were wet.  He recoiled and rubbed his warm, wet fingers together. Unable to see them, he stood on his toes and held his hand up to the light. His fingers were covered in a sticky, red substance. Still woozy from the noise, he reached for the door in an attempt to steady himself but his hand slid across the slippery surface and he struggled to catch his balance. He took a backward step and his footing gave way. He scrambled for solid ground and as his feet hit the surface the world became illuminated.  It was only then that he realized why the door was so shiny. The red door was thick, a scarlet portal of blood.

    Homecoming

Jack Bronson dug feverously through the cardboard box that sat next to the dinette in the kitchen. He couldn’t believe that he had remembered to unpack the coffee maker and buy coffee and milk but forgot to unpack his cup and spoons.  The dream had interrupted his sleep yet again and there was no way that he could start his new job without a good shot of caffeine.  The smell of the fresh brew only made the search more desperate.

This was Jack’s first morning in his new place, a little beach side bungalow in Keansburg, New Jersey but this wasn’t a move to a new location. It was, in a sense, his homecoming. Jack was born and raised in New Jersey but had done his best to remove himself from it for the past fifteen years.  First, he joined the military then the F.B.I., and most recently a small police force in New Hampshire.  His departure from New Hampshire came as quite a surprise to everyone there. He had just successfully solved a very high profile case and was in the good graces of both his captain and the city officials but the case had both taken a personal toll on him and provided him with profound clarity. It was time to go home and face his demons and now he was just a stone’s throw away from his mother who lived in Port Monmouth.

His captain provided him with a shining recommendation and that combined with his positive press in the National and a local headline or two assured him a detective spot on this new police force and today was his first day. He hadn’t even told his family that he was back in Jersey yet. He told himself that it was better to get settled first but the truth was, he just wasn’t ready to face them.  He wanted to start work and build some semblance of normalcy. Now, coffee successfully inserted into a cup and stirred with a leftover fast food straw, he would begin that journey.

The smell of sea air greeted him as he hopped in the car and headed to his future. He was excited to be in a place where the major crimes tended to be theft related. Keansburg hadn’t had a reported murder in ten years and after his last case, Jack was ready to remove himself from the gory side of law enforcement. He hoped that would be the case at least. After all, his last case in New Hampshire was the first multiple murder case the area had ever experienced, and based on his true findings from that case, bad things can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone.

Jack entered the small station and made his way to the information desk. They were expecting him and an officer escorted him to the Chief's office. It wasn’t long before his presence was known and the Chief walked excitedly to greet him.

Good morning, Jack. Glad you made it in this morning. We have some paperwork for you to fill out so if you’ll have a seat we can get it out of the way and get you to work.

Thanks, I appreciate the welcome, Jack said taking a seat at the cluttered, old desk.

The Chief handed him a manila envelope filled with the usual pre-employment documents. Jack thumbed through them, pulling his pen from his lapel pocket.

The Chief waited until the door was closed and began to speak. "Jack, you should be expecting this, I’m sure, but I have to ask anyway.  Based on your exceptional record you could be working anywhere. I’d expect that you would have at least considered the State Police before coming somewhere like this. This town is stuck in 1975 and though we are
