The Phone Call
What is that ticking!
David Dean threw his arms in the air toppling his coffee and drenching his notebook.
Terror was setting in as he mopped the wet paper with a handful of napkins! His full day of work now had more than a hint of cappuccino and he was not amused.
He looked up to discover a battery-operated clock above the office door.
When and why did we get a clock?
he exclaimed to the empty office, Doesn’t everyone have their face glued to a cell phone or tablet all day?
Being alone in the office was a new experience for the doctor. He hadn’t realized that Thomas’ consulting gig would overlap Kerry’s vacation. If he had, he may have taken the week off too.
It’s no use.
He muttered as he contemplated shutting down for the day but the ringing of the office phone diverted his attention.
This too, was new for him. He never answered this line because the only people who called it were strangers. Everyone else had his personal number. It was Kerry’s job to answer these calls and weed out the crazies before they could reach him.
He picked up the receiver, This is Dr. David Dean. How may I help you?
Dr. Dean, my name is Dr. Parvett. You may remember me from the symposium last July?
July? No, sorry. How may I help you?
David replied.
The man on the line cleared his throat. He was mildly wounded by David’s response.
Well, sir, I gave a seminar on spirit photography.
He continued.
Oh, yes! Kirlian photography. The phenomena of electrical coronal discharge have been widely debunked for over a decade. How may I help you, Doctor?
David answered, still having no recollection of said seminar.
Well, sir, I am referring to gas discharge visualization.
The now flustered caller replied.
Same wheelhouse, doctor. How may I help you?
David said, tapping his foot.
Perhaps, I’ve made a mistake calling you. I would expect someone with your noted standing in the field of paranormal research to be a tad more open minded.
I can assure you, my closed mind is the exact reason that I maintain my noted standing in the field. So, then, are we finished here or would you like to tell me how I might help you?
The receiver was sliding down his arm on its way back to the cradle.
I have photographic evidence of the spirit leaving a human body at the exact moment of death!
Parvet shouted.
That’s wonderful, but as I said…
David began but was hastily interrupted.
There’s more! I have photographic evidence of the spirit returning to the body days later.
Parvet exclaimed.
And how did you manage this?
David asked.
Because I still have the body,
Parvet replied.
Are you supposed to have this body?
David asked.
Well, yes, you see, the body was donated to science. It will eventually make its way to a medical school, but I’ve elected to delay its transport based on these events.
The doctor replied.
And if you have your evidence, why are you still keeping the body?
David was intrigued.
Because the energy continues to come and go. I can’t explain it. I fear that this spirit is stuck here. Confused, perhaps?
The words grew softer as Parvet spoke.
And you don’t want to be responsible for a lost soul?
David asked.
Not the most professional answer, I know, but yes.
Parvet let out a long sigh and David could feel his despair.
Tell me where you are and I’ll make travel arrangements. Remind me to provide you with my cell number before we disconnect.
David said and the doctor complied.
Now, to figure out how to make travel arrangements. I’ve depended on Kerry for far too long.
David thought.
Sedona
Sedona, Arizona was the destination. Dr. Parvet offered to pick David up at the airport but he preferred to have his own transportation. If this trip turned out to be a waste of time, he would want to make a hasty exit.
As David drove to the medical facility, he thought about his friend Jimmy Redbush. If he wasn’t on the road, he would be in his home at the Window Rock in the Navajo Nation. It would take less than four hours to drive there. He made a mental note to call Redbush once he checked in to his hotel.
The medical building was smaller than he’d imagined. The single -story concrete building was surrounded by a tall fence. The only entrance was guarded by armed security. As David drove closer, he realized the guards were military.
The two soldiers walked toward his vehicle. One stood in front of the car with his hand on his side arm. The other approached the driver’s window and leaned in close.
State your business here, Sir.
He barked.
My name is Doctor David Dean. I was asked to come meet with Doctor Parvet. He’s expecting me.
David said, wincing at the scent of the soldier’s lunch that now assaulted his sinuses.
Remain in your vehicle and turn off the ignition.
The soldier said as he lumbered away to the guard shack.
David watched as he picked up
