    Introduction

Daniel Masterson was living the dream. A freelance graphic artist, he worked from his home office every day. He had no commute, no boss, and no specific schedule. Daniel often worked late into the night or early in the morning—whenever he felt like it. He made a pretty decent living, too. Whenever he explained what he did for a living, the other person would reply, Man, I would love to have that job. You must be so happy every day!

And, yet, Daniel wasn’t happy at all. He missed having a regular schedule; missed the companionship of co-workers. He missed getting a paycheck every other week and having benefits. Mostly, he missed the stress-free life of having someone else giving him work assignments. So, Daniel Masterson did what millions of other people would consider unthinkable. Daniel Masterson quit a successful freelance career and got a job.

Within a month, Daniel was ecstatic. He loved the routine of getting to work each day, having an office, going to lunch with colleagues. He was respected for his talent and had happy clients that he didn’t have to go find. Daniel Masterson is living proof that happiness means something different to each and every person.

Are you happy? I’m not asking if you feel happy at this moment, or if you enjoyed your day today. What I’m asking is, on a day-to-day basis, do you feel a sense of deep, inner happiness? Is your happiness a feeling that comes and goes depending on the things that happen to you, or is it something within you that is fixed and immutable?

My name is Timothy McKinney and I study happiness. Lately, though, it’s been easier for me to study UNHAPPINESS. I’ve noticed that more and more people are feeling stuck, frustrated, and want more from their lives. So many people are walking around unhappy. Listen to any news station on radio or television and you’ll hear phrases like crisis and emergency. Stories of failure and misery abound. Frankly, it’s easier to find a failure story these days than a success story.

And, yet, not EVERYONE is unhappy. No matter what the circumstances, there are always some people who have a smile on their face. When you ask them, How are you they reply, Fantastic!

So, I got to wondering, What’s the difference? What exactly is happiness and how can someone achieve it? That’s why I wrote Heaven on Earth. This book is a comprehensive examination of all of the things that go into determining whether or not someone will be happy. I’ve taken solid academic research and theories on happiness and have combined them with the leading ideas from self-help and psychology, and developed ten hows of happiness. By the end of this book, you’ll have discovered:

    <> What happiness really is

<> How you can know if you’re happy (hint: it’s not a feeling)

<> What the benefits are to being happy

<> What the individual differences of happiness are

<> What foods you should eat to be happier

<> Whether or not money can make you happy
