About Our Cover Story – Sydney Australia

Since jet setting is part of such a grand lifestyle, the Insiders’ Lifestyle Guides series theme includes a cultural or travel experience with every book. That is, between promotional junkets, film festivals and red carpet appearances, celebrities can rack up as many frequent-flier miles as they do trips to rehab. And so can you, once you have an insider bird’s eye view of the possibilities.

Whether traveling by plane or virtually by way of these pages, our cover story is Sydney Australia. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is the main crossing of Sydney Harbour carrying rail, vehicular, and pedestrian traffic between the Sydney central business district (CBD) and the North Shore. The dramatic water vista of the bridge together with the nearby Sydney Opera House is an iconic image of both Sydney and Australia.

Sydney is the most populous city in Australia and the state capital of New South Wales. It is located on Australia’s South-East coast of the Tasman Sea. As of 2010, the greater metropolitan area had an approximate population of 4.6 million people. Inhabitants of Sydney are called Sydneysiders, comprising a cosmopolitan and international population.

The site of the first British colony in Australia, Sydney was established in 1788 at Sydney Cove by Arthur Phillip, commodore of the First Fleet as a penal colony. The city is built on hills surrounding Port Jackson, which is commonly known as Sydney Harbour, where the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge feature prominently. The hinterland of the metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks, and the coastal regions featuring many bays, rivers, inlets and beaches including the famous Bondi Beach and Manly Beach. Within the city are many notable parks, including Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Sydney often ranks highly in various world cities rankings. It has hosted major international sporting events, including the 1938 British Empire Games and the 2000 Summer Olympics. The main airport serving Sydney is Sydney Airport and the main port in the city is Sydney Harbour.

    Passionate About Business

When you choose to open a business, your chances at success – and satisfaction – are greater if you love the work you do.

If you start a new business today, you stand a reasonably good chance of surviving for two years. But after two years, success rates drop. According to the Small Business Administration, only 44 percent of new businesses make it to their fourth year. But these numbers shouldn’t discourage you if your business is also your passion.

Far too often, business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs, and even college students, who, instead of following their hearts, follow the crowd and end up terribly disappointed. You can learn techniques to improve your pitch or presentation, but you cannot be taught the intangible quality that separates average business people from inspiring communicators – inspiring leaders are obsessed with what they do. Successful business stars are passionate about their products, services, company, or cause. Instead of doing what someone else told them they should do, they went with the feeling in their gut – and made a business out of the one thing that consumed their thoughts.

    Unlocking Your Potential

How do you find your true passion? Passions are irresistible. If you’re paying attention to your life at all, the things you are passionate about won’t leave you lone. They’re the ideas, hopes, and possibilities your mind naturally gravitates to, the things you would focus your time and attention on for no other reason than that doing them feels right. Only by following your passion will you unlock your deepest potential.

Bill Strickland, author of Make the Impossible Possible, writes: I never saw a meaningful life that wasn’t based on passion. And I never saw a life full of passion that wasn’t, in some important way, extraordinary.

When you choose to open a business or franchise simply because your neighbor is doing well at it, you increase the likelihood of failure. When you enter a career because your brother-in-law made a lot of money in it last year, you increase the odds of living an unsatisfied life. And when you choose a college major solely to satisfy your parents, you raise the risk of becoming bored instead of energized by your classes.

Starting a business is fraught with hurdles and setbacks. But if you’re following your inner voice – the thoughts that won’t leave you alone, failure is never final. Just remember to pay attention to what you love doing.

A case on point: James Dyson loved tinkering and inventing. One day he grew frustrated by a weak vacuum that seemed to lose suction. So he got to work. Five years later he created a vacuum that would one day turn into a $6 billion company. But he could have quit 5,126 times. That’s how many prototypes it took to build the first bagless vacuum cleaner. Major manufacturers rejected his technology because they made money on the bags. Dyson was anything but discouraged. He persisted, and today James Dyson is worth an estimated $2 billion. Enjoy failure and learn from it, Dyson once said. You can never learn from success.

Don’t let your obsession die. Embrace it, revel in it, and use it to stand apart. Follow your heart and not the crowd.

    Find Your Passion

For today’s aspiring entrepreneur, exploring avenues of creativity to find your passion is likely the quickest route to increase your chances of launching a successful business. Where to start? Consider the following five exercises to help you uncover your passion.

    Revisit Your Childhood

What did you love to do as a child?

It’s amazing how disconnected we become to the things that brought us the most joy in favor of what’s practical.

Make a list of all the things you remember enjoying as a child. Then ask yourself, Would you enjoy that activity now?

Research shows that there is much to be discovered in child’s play, even as adults.

Then, revisit some of the positive activities, foods and events of childhood.

What can be translated and added into your life now?

How can those past experiences shape your career choices now?

    Make a Creativity Board

Start by taking a large poster board, put the words New Business in the center and create a collage of images, sayings, articles, poems and other inspirations.

The idea behind this exercise is that when you surround yourself with images of your intention – who you want to become or what you want to create – your awareness and passion will grow. As your board evolves and becomes more focused, you will begin to recognize what is missing and imagine ways to fill the blanks and realize your vision.

Make a List of People Who are Where You Want to Be

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Study people who have been successful in the area you want to pursue.

For example, during the recession, many people shielded away from the real estate market because they thought it was a dead end. But this might have been a perfect time to jump in – when most others are bailing out – because no matter the business, there are people who are successful in it. Study them; figure out how and why they are able to remain successful when everyone else is folding and then set up structures to imitate them.

If you want to be creative, create a rigorous and formal plan. It’s not the plan that is creative; it’s the process that you go through that opens up so many possibilities.

    Start Doing What You Love

A lot of people wait until they have an extensive business plan written down, along with angel investors wanting to throw cash at them – and their ideas never see the light of day.

Instead, start doing what you enjoy first – even if you haven’t yet figured out how to monetize it. Test what it might be like to work in an area you’re passionate about. Build your business network and ask for feedback that will help you develop and refine a business plan. It’s a way to not only show the value you would bring, but you can also get testimonials that will help launch your business when you’re ready to make it official.

Perhaps most importantly, though, it’ll shift you out of paralysis and fear. Then the joy of seeing the difference your contribution makes will fuel your creativity.

Take a Break from Business Thinking

While it might feel uncomfortable to step outside of business mode, the mind sometimes needs a rest from such bottom-line thinking. Maybe for you, it will be creative writing, painting, running or even gardening.

After you take a mental vacation indulging in something you’re passionate about, come back to a journal and writing down any business ideas that come to mind. You’ll be amazed at how refreshed your ideas are.

For example, looking at beautiful things – art and nature – creates connections that we often neglect to notice. Notice them, capture them in writing and use them.

    Strong Leadership Qualities

Managers are people who do things right, while leaders are people who do the right thing.

    Building Excellence

Leaders do not command excellence they build excellence. Excellence is being all you can be within the bounds of doing what is right for your organization. To reach excellence you must first be a leader of good character. You must do everything you are supposed to do. Organizations will not achieve excellence by figuring out where it wants to go, then having leaders do whatever they have to in order to get the job done, and then hope their leaders acted with good character. This type of thinking is backwards.

Pursuing excellence should not be confused with accomplishing a job or task. When you do planning, you do it by backwards planning. But you do not achieve excellence by backwards planning. Excellence starts with leaders of good and strong character who engage in the entire process of leadership. And the first process is being a person of honorable character.

Character develops over time. Many think that much of a person’s character is formed early in life. However, we do not know exactly how much or how early character develops. But, it is safe to claim that character does not change quickly. A person’s observable behavior is an indication of his or her character. This behavior can be strong or weak, good or bad. A person with strong character shows drive, energy, determination, self-discipline, willpower, and nerve. He or she sees what he or she wants and goes after it. He or she attracts followers. On the other hand, a person with weak character shows none of these traits. He or she does not know what he or she wants. His or her traits are disorganized; he or she vacillates and is inconsistent. He or she will attract no followers.

A strong person can be good or bad. A gang leader is an example of a strong person with a bad character; while an outstanding community leader is one with both strong and good characteristics. An organization needs leaders with both strong and good characteristics, people who will guide them to the future and who can be trusted.

To be an effective leader, your followers must have trust in you and they need to be sold on your vision. Korn-Ferry International, an executive search company, performed a survey on what organizations want from their leaders. The respondents said they wanted people who were both ethical and who convey a strong vision of the future. In any organization, a leader’s actions set the pace. This behavior wins trust, loyalty, and ensures the organization’s continued vitality. One of the ways to build trust is to display a good sense of character composed of beliefs, values, skills, and traits.

Beliefs. Beliefs are what we hold dear to us and are rooted deeply within us. They could be assumptions or convictions that you hold true regarding people, concepts, or things. They could be your beliefs about life, death, religion, what is good, what is bad, what is human nature, etc.

Values. Values are attitudes about the worth of people, concepts, or things. For example, you might value a good car, home, friendship, personal comfort, or relatives. Values are important as they influence a person’s behavior to weigh the importance of alternatives. For example, you might value friends more than privacy, while others might be the opposite.

Skills. Skills are the knowledge and abilities that a person gains throughout life. The ability
