About Our Cover Story – Atlanta Georgia

Since jet setting is part of such a grand lifestyle, the Insiders’ Lifestyle Guides series theme includes a cultural or travel experience with every book. That is, between promotional junkets, film festivals and red carpet appearances, celebrities can rack up as many frequent-flyer miles as they do trips to rehab. And so can you, once you have an insider bird’s eye view of the possibilities.

Whether traveling by plane or virtually by way of these pages, our cover story, Atlanta Georgia and its evening skyline punctuated with highway, light streaks from traffic, cars, crescent moons, and skyscrapers of modern and postmodern vintage exudes cultural history. Its tallest landmark – the Bank of America Plaza – is the twenty-fifth tallest building in the world at 1,023 feet. While the city’s high-rises are clustered in three districts – Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead.

Atlanta began as a settlement located at the terminus of a railroad line, and it was incorporated in 1845. Today, the city is a major business city and the primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport being the world’s busiest airport since 1998. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Atlanta as an alpha-world city. With a gross domestic product of US$270 billion, Atlanta’s economy ranks fifteenth among world cities and sixth in the nation.

The city is a center for services, finance, information technology, government, and higher education. Metro Atlanta contains the country’s third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies, and is the world headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company, Turner Broadcasting, The Home Depot, AT&T Mobility, UPS, and Delta Air Lines as of 2010. Atlanta is the seventh most visited city in the United States with over thirty-five million visitors per year.

The city has long been known as a center of black wealth, political power and culture; a cradle of the Civil Rights Movement and home to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. However, the city’s white population is growing rapidly while Metro Atlanta has quickly become ethnically diverse with large Hispanic and Asian populations.

The arts and entertainment are also well represented in Atlanta, and the city is an important base for hip-hop, gospel, and neo soul music. In addition, it has become a major center for film and TV production.

Atlanta also stands out among major U.S. cities for its dense tree coverage. In 1996, Atlanta hosted the Summer Olympics, an event that spurred a wave of gentrification that has intensified into the twenty-first century, revitalizing the city’s center and in-town neighborhoods.

    Showers, Bathing, Pampering

Organize your bathroom. Take stock of what you have, need or use. Toss products that serve the same function, are old, or obsolete. Consider sorting bathroom products by category. For instance, store one container for manicure supplies, another for facials. Repeat the sorting process on going.

Choose clear containers and avoid overcrowding. Also, consider downsizing to save shelf space – transfer products in smaller containers. Consider storage cabinets and glass jars with lids from stores like Pottery Barn.

Add scent to towels by placing them next to an open jar of perfumed soaps, bath salts or potpourri.

And do leave an extra toothbrush in the bathroom because you never know.

    Showers

By now, of course, you know how to take a shower: Get wet, lather up, and rinse off. But there’s more to it than you might think. For example, did you know that the chlorine in your water is fading your highlights? That hot showers are causing rough, dry skin? That your nylon loofah is depositing more germs than it’s scrubbing off? We’re not suggesting you relearn the basics, but a few small changes can make a big difference.

Start by swapping your showerhead for one that removes chlorine and add a water purifier. You will notice a difference in your skin and hair immediately. For shaving, use a multi-blade refillable razor to prevent nicks and red bumps. And use a washcloth instead of a nylon loofah.

In other words, there are plenty of tricks that will help your hair and skin.

    Showering Tips

    1. Turn the water temperature to warm, not hot. Ideally between 75 and 80 degrees. If you are planning to be in for more than ten minutes, coat your body (but not your feet) with oil before getting under the water.

    2. Step in, and start by shampooing and conditioning your hair. When done, rinse your hair thoroughly.

    3. Exfoliate with a clean loofah, grainy body scrub or a coarse washcloth with body wash on it. Start at the neck to your feet. Go lightly on the chest and skip the legs if you’re going to shave. (A loofah with a handle will reach your back.)

    4. Slough feet with a pumice stone to prevent feet and back of ankles from getting rough.

    5. Before shaving your legs, cover your legs with moisturizing shaving cream. Then use a multi-blade razor. Repeat the process on your underarms.

    6. Clean hands, feet, butt, and groin with a creamy body wash and the face with cleanser. Rinse off.

    7. Out of the shower, pat skin dry with a soft terry-cloth towel before wrapping the towel around your hair.

    8. While your skin is still damp, coat your entire body with lotion to seal in moisture.

    9. Finally, slip on a terry-cloth robe and a pair of socks or terry-cloth flip-flops to absorb the excess grease.

Make sure your towel dries completely between uses by putting it on a hook rather than a towel rack.

    Shower Him with Attention

Shower him with attention by turning your bathroom into a spa-style steam room.

    1. Pour a few drops of eucalyptus or spearmint essential oil onto a loofah or sea sponge and place it on a shelf inside your shower.

    2. Turn the hot water on full blast, then leave the room, close the door, and wait five minutes. The steam will diffuse the essential oil and fill the room with an amazing mentholated aroma that helps open up your lungs so you can breathe deeply and relieve tension.

    3. Lure your man into the steamy bathroom, then adjust the water to a more reasonable temperature and step in.

    4. Use a foaming body wash and big washcloth to suds him up.

    5. Tell him to face the shower wall and place both hands against it while you lather his back – he’ll love this sexy, submissive stance.

    6. You know the rest . . .

    Bathing

When it comes to bathing, there is no better experience than draping yourself in warm towels after a relaxing bath. Heated towel warmers or racks are worth the splurge. Near the bath, place an orchid, lotion, and three small candles as a reminder to continue the experience and enhance your pleasure when bathing.

    Bathing Tips

    1. If your skin is especially dull and flaky, take a handful of raw sugar, mix it with canola oil, and massage into your skin before your bath for one to two minutes. The granules exfoliate the skin. And unlike salt, sugar doesn’t irritate nicked or sunburned skin.

    2. Spike your bath with fragrant sea salts or bath salts to polish and invigorate your skin.

    3. After ten minutes in the bathtub add drops of oil to seal in moisture.

    4. Soak in the tub for at least fifteen minutes and then exfoliate one limb at a time.

    5. Out of the tub, drape yourself in warm towels before spreading a fine layer of moisturizer all over your body from head to toe. You’ll emerge with supple skin.

    6. Top off your bathing experience with a mind-altering scalp massage before wrapping yourself in blankets.

    A Sultry Soak

The key to creating a relaxing, therapeutic, romantic bath for two is to set the right mood.

    1. Dim the lights or light a candle and turn the lights off.

    2. Slip a sexy CD on.

    3. Put a chilled bottle of champagne or crisp white wine by the tub.

    4. Draw a hot bath, but don’t let it get scalding – too hot can dehydrate your body.

    5. Pour in a cup of Epsom salts into the bath. The salt helps maintain moisture in your body and draws out the toxins.

    6. Other sensual additions to consider may include: a few drops of essential oil or a silky bubbly bath.

    7. Wrap a terry cloth towel around the faucet and secure it with a rubber band. That way one of you can lean on it and you can soak facing each other.

    8. Now just relax and enjoy.

    Bathhouses

Begin your session in the bathhouse where you can relax in the sauna, steam room, whirlpool or hot-and-cold plunge pools until your muscles feel like play-doe. Then a massage therapist will work you over from scalp to toe, hitting pressure points with his or her elbows and forearms. You can cap off a session with a siesta in the nap room.

    Pampering

You deserve to take care of you, and it’s often the smallest indulgences that can make a dramatic difference in how you look and feel. It’s never too early or too late in life to start pampering your skin. You don’t have to wait for problems to develop. Cleanse, moisturize and protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays, it’s that simple.

    Spa Treatments

Give yourself a day off for pampering and go to the spa periodically. A relaxation library filled with overstuffed chairs, wool throws, and heated neck pillows, even a butler to fetch tea, champagne, or the book of your choice is all about pampering. But what if you don’t have a butler? A trip to the spa can give you similar results.

For example, imagine manicure and pedicure stations with personal headsets, flat-screen televisions, and DVD players. Or, a fifty-minute mud treatment – performed in an ornately tiled steam chamber – that’s rinsed clean by rain that falls from a fiber-optic night sky. Still, perhaps his and her wet areas surrounded by a black bamboo Zen garden complete with Jacuzzis, cold-plunge pools, and aromatherapy steam rooms and showers might be your things.

The point is, you want to schedule a trip to the spa every two or three weeks. In the meantime, do simple things to maintain the mood at home. For example, you may want to create a seductive ambience in your bedroom with an orchid. This elegant Asian flower is a spa décor staple, and it’s petals resemble female genitalia – a visual cue your man is sure to pick up on, if only subliminally.

    Spa VIP Treatment Tips

    1. Plan ahead and ask the right questions when making reservations.

    2. Ask the spa director to recommend an aesthetician (facialist or massage therapist).

    3. Arrange for all services and tips to be charged to your room or credit card.

    4. Soak it up – arrive ten to forty-five minutes before your appointment so you can change and fill out any forms.

    5. If really early, many spas have saunas, color therapy showers, pools and massage jets, and private lounges. Moreover, someone who can offer you a cup of tea, a blanket, or salts for the tub regularly canvasses these areas.

    6. Think locally for the cultural experience services you can’t get elsewhere when booking spa appointments away from home.

    7. Do it your way. Massages or manicures are ideal in your hotel room but most body treatments are too messy and cumbersome.

Clear Skin – A Sign of Upscale Skin

You won’t see sunspots or pimples on expensive skin. And beautiful skin makes anybody’s shape look sexier.

Skin renews itself every twenty-eight days, a process that allows dulling dead cells to be sloughed off and newer, healthier and more glowing skin to shine through. But the process begins to slow in our thirties.

Nonetheless, you can give skin a helping hand by exfoliating two to three times per week. It is one of the quickest ways to get a radiant complexion with a gentle exfoliating scrub, which literally sloughs off dead, dulling cells on the skin’s surface – and allows newer, healthier and more radiant skin cells to shine through.

In addition, if you do microdermabrasion or mild acid peels twice a week as part of your at-home skin regimen, you’re ahead of the game. Over forty skin has more cellular debris on its surface and a more irregular texture. Exfoliation pumices off the flake and debris so your foundation doesn’t have to work as hard. It also makes your pores look smaller so your base won’t accent craters around the nose or chin.

    Clear Skin

Know your skin’s triggers. If you have sensitive skin, avoid perfumed, anti-bacterial and deodorant products, which can easily aggravate it. And look for the words for sensitive skin and fragrance free on product labels.

You can also put an end to body breakouts by cleaning pimple-prone body skin (back, shoulders, buttock) at least once a day. Use an acne wash with a wipe or pad that contains breakout-busting salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Regular use of either will help clear skin or prevent new pimples from forming.

    Clear Skin Tips

    1. Keep your hands off any blemishes. Touching, picking, or squeezing will only make them worse.

    2. Massage a nickel-size blob of PH-balanced anti-bacterial cleanser over the face and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. (Beware of sodium laurel sulfate. It’s a common ingredient in cleansers, but it is as harsh as laundry soap.)

    3. Blot face with a clean towel and allow five minutes for the skin to air-dry.

    4. For acne-prone skin, rub on a chemical
