This work is dedicated to my mother who forbade me from sitting on her front porch with boys. Although I never did it, she made it noticeably clear that I was to never do it. She was very conscious of how things are perceived.

I want to acknowledge my early Muslim upbringing; I am in debt. Most of my adult personality is deeply rooted in all things from birth up until about age eleven. These moments were most religious for my family, and much of who I am today is deeply rooted in the behaviors taught during those early years.
I acknowledge that Islam had a profound effect on my developing mind and in building my personality. It was responsible for getting me through doors that would have otherwise been closed to others.
With an extreme emphasis on manners, mannerism, kindness, honesty, and compassion for others, I know this discipline is what leads to this book.
INTRODUCTION
Growing up in the late ’70s was a very fragile time for little brown girls in hoods across America. Fragile in the sense that the early ’70s had witnessed a revolution take place in Black America. The I’m Black and I’m Proud
movement had started in 1968 with James Brown screaming it from stage tops in brown pants and crop tops.
