And so can you, once you have an insider bird’s eye view of the possibilities.

Whether traveling by plane or virtually by way of these pages, our cover story, Berlin Germany, is situated on Museum Island. The Bode Museum features a wide collection of Byzantine Art. Hair Care – Shinier, Sexier, Healthier

Before you say a word at an interview, a social event, or conference, your hair has already spoken volumes. To convey the right message, hair should be simple – clean and shiny. Oily hair, overgrown roots, and distracting hair accessories are deal-breakers. And if you have bangs, make sure they’re neatly trimmed. Pinning them off your face can make you look like you’re easily annoyed or impulsive.

We all want a mane of soft, silky, touchable locks. But the reality is that hair grows only about a half-inch per month. But you can jump-start the process and stop hair’s biggest enemy – breakage – and keep strands strong.

If you want shine, never skip conditioner.

    Start In the Shower

Over washing can dry out your hair, so the less you shampoo, the more hydrated it will be and the longer it will grow without breaking. When you do shampoo, consider a sulfate-free formula; they often contain less harsh detergents, or none at all, and therefore help reserve your hair’s natural oils. While lathering, remember that shampoo is meant to remove product buildup and oil from the scalp, not the hair fiber.

Prior to washing, massage your scalp for 30 seconds, stimulating your scalp. When you massage your scalp with shampoos containing peppermint or eucalyptus oil, you’ll feel a tingling sensation. This helps increase circulation and blood flow to your follicles, boosting growth. In one year, your hair can grow an extra inch.

When your hair is well hydrated, it is less likely to dry out and split, so use a conditioner even on the days when you skip shampoo. Your hair should be treated gently, like a delicate fabric, but it also needs to be regularly nourished. Apply a deep-conditioning product at least once a week.

    Style with Tender Loving Care

If you’re not careful, your hairbrush can actually do more harm than good. Ripping through wet tangles creates split ends, so try gently running a wide-tooth plastic comb from roots to ends. When blow-drying with a round brush, don’t pull too hard or you can break and pull out your hair. When you’re not styling, avoid a brush altogether. Brushing 100 strokes a day is completely old-fashioned and not a good idea.

Applying hot tools directly to your hair can fry the cuticle, so coat wet locks with a creamy moisturizing product for protection. The best tools to prevent heat damage are ionic dryers and ceramic irons with uniformly heated plates (so you don’t have to go over the same section more than once). For waves, hot rollers can be gentler than curling irons.

    Fake It

To maximize your length quickly, eliminate volume at the roots. You want your hair to be as straight and flat as possible with a sleek type blow dry.

Smoothing out your frizz makes your hair look longer. And, for a glossy effect, apply a shine product.

If you’re into extensions, try the clip-in kind. They’re affordable and readily available. To keep them looking natural, choose ones that really match your hair texture, and don’t add more than three to four inches.

    Inside the Salon

Contrary to what some stylists say, haircuts don’t stimulate growth. If you’re trying to grow your hair, do not cut the length, no matter how fried it is. Instead, ask for your ends to be trimmed. For a style change, short, blunt bangs will make your hair look longer, because the jump is so dramatic.

Go for a keratin treatment every eight weeks while growing out your hair. It smooth’s out the texture so there’s less need for hot tools or dryers. Also, by coating hair with a protective layer, the treatments help protect colored or chemically treated hair from further damage.

    Monitor Your Health

For a boost, supplements help reduce breakage and increase hydration, which is crucial to the growing process. Look for supplements where the main ingredients are a blend of marine proteins derived from fish rich in protein and amino acids. You take one in the morning and evening, and in two months your hair growth will kick in at an accelerated rate. Some dermatologists also suggest taking a multi-vitamin with biotin and a fish-oil pill to make your hair stronger.

Check your meds. Did you know that some birth-control pills could cause hair thinning? Although it’s typically not a direct cause and effect, any changes in a woman’s hormonal situation can yield hair loss. Check with your doctor if you’re concerned.

Manage your stress. Stress causes the release of cortisol and other hormones that contribute to hair thinning. The good news is you can reverse the problem by getting your stress under control.

Scalp massage, anyone? A recent study at Massachusetts General Hospital showed that scalp massages, which increase blood flow, might keep your hair healthy.

    Shampooing Hair Tips

    1. Detangle locks with a wide-tooth comb post shower, working from the ends up.

    2. Hair is most vulnerable to breakage when wet. Use the pads of your fingers to massage shampoo into your scalp.

    3. In the shower, shampooing with naturally derived cleansers is less apt to rob your hair of vital oils. Before applying shampoo or conditioner, emulsify them in your hands. Then massage onto roots, crown, and finally down sides of hair.

    4. Shampoo two or three times a week and on off days, rinse with water and condition only the ends.

    5. Do deep-conditioning once a week.

    Shinier Hair

Gleaming hair is a sign of youth and vitality. Pollution, harsh chemicals, and heat styling can all turn hair dull, but a few extra steps will ensure your head shines.

Look for shine-enhancing shampoo and conditioner with ingredients like olive oil, jojoba, and rice proteins. Alternate these with your regular formulas to prevent buildup. After you shampoo, apply a conditioner evenly through the ends and rinse thoroughly. If your hair is colored-treated, use a hair mask weekly to replenish moisture.

Rinsing hair with cold water closes the cuticle, leaving a smooth, shiny surface. Blasting with cold air after a blow dry has a similar smoothing effect, and most dryers have a cold setting for this purpose.

    1. Try a cellophane wrap. It’s like a long-lasting lip gloss for your hair. Glossier than a glaze, a cellophane should coat your cuticles, making them lie flat so that hair reflects more light (for up to six weeks). And it doesn’t change the underlying hair color, so no roots – and no maintenance.

    2. Products with silicones lie on top of the hair shaft to seal the cuticle and create a barrier between styling tools and hair, reducing friction and limiting heat damage. But like many other things, silicone works best in moderation. Use too much of it and your hair will fall flat or begin to look greasy. If you have thinner tresses, use a misting of a silicone shine spray instead.

    3. Avoid alcohol-laced products. Alcohol, pollution, and humidity all rob hair of its natural shine. Most mousses contain alcohol; so if your hair is dry, try a cream or serum instead.

After towel drying, apply either a glossing cream or shine serum with high levels of panthenol (provitamin B5). Glossing creams are lighter and have less silicone, so they’re more appropriate for women with fine to medium hair. Use a shine serum if you have frizzy or coarse hair or unruly curls. Massage a quarter-size dollop of the product evenly through your hair.

Dry the right way. Place a round, natural-bristle brush under a three-inch section of hair. Start at the roots, and hold the dryer so the nozzle aims downward – never up against the shaft. Slide the brush down without twisting it, to seal the cuticle.

While your hair is still warm from the dryer, flip it upside down and mist the ends with a shine spray. This ensures you won’t get too much product near the roots. If you need a touch-up during the day, spritz some shine spray on your hands and run them lightly through your hair. Again, you don’t want to overdo it.

    Is Your Hair Aging You?

Forget your hands. These days, experts say your hair is what really betrays your age. Learn how to stay forever young – follicularly speaking.

    Hold On To Your Hair

The best way to retain your locks is to treat them with love. Chemically process as infrequently as possible, and avoid anything that pulls on hair, such as tight rollers, ponytails, weaves, and braids.

In addition, don’t under estimate the power of proper nutrition. If you want to keep your hair, control your weight by exercising, not dieting.

Also consider using protein laced styling products.

    Boost Your Hair’s Health

Healthy hair connotes a healthy woman. Fortunately, restoring your hair’s health is fairly easy. You can take off about two years worth of damage in a month. Start in the shower, when your hair is fragile and most receptive to aid. To replenish luster, look for shampoos and conditioners with dimethicone (a shine enhancing ingredient) and cetyl alcohol (a moisturizing ingredient). And even if you don’t shampoo every time you shower, coat your hair with conditioner whenever it is exposed to any kind of water. Water is highly dulling and drying to hair.

Furthermore, beware of professional grade heat styling tools. A pro holds a blow dryer at least twenty-four inches from your head, while we just blow the things into our eardrums, cooking our hair in the process. Wet-to-dry hair straightening irons also wreck havoc. Limit use of these tools to no more than three times a week, and make sure that when you use them, you shield your strands with a heat-protectant deep-conditioning treatment.

You will also want to avoid UV rays. They strip hair of moisture, shine, and pigment.

    Get the Right Cut

Work with your stylist to find a lightly layered look that falls well around your face and is an appropriate length for your proportions and lifestyle. Getting the right cut can do perhaps more than anything else to keep you looking your age (or younger). In most cases, you want a neutral, adaptable haircut that gives you options, so you usually want to steer clear of short, blunt bangs, or bobs.

    Kick Up the Contrast

Your hair color can make you look older or younger, too. As we age we lose definition in our face, and hair color can add that back in. If you’ve gone too blonde in an attempt to cover the gray, add in some deeper caramel lowlights. The bottom line is contrast – more than one color.

    Hair Treatments and Conditioning

Damaged hair demands a diet of key conditioning and strengthening ingredients, such as amino acids and panthemol or pro-vitamin B5. Check the ingredient labels on your products. Many shampoos contain additional conditioners that will weigh down the roots. Avoid color-depositing shampoos – the pigment stains hair. And steer clear of deep-cleaning shampoos and oil-based conditioners, which can strip color.

    Hair Conditioning

Conditioning your hair covers the damage and makes it shiny. Hair is dead, and conditioner can’t undo the damage but it still can make damaged hair look great. The cuticle of hair looks like fish scales. When the fish scales are very dry they curl upward, and they’re rough and rigid. When they’re hydrated, they lie flat. Conditioning coats the cuticle, making the hair smoother, easier to comb, and less flyaway, so it appears healthy, strong, and shiny.

The general rule of thumb is that the thicker and curlier the hair, the heavier the conditioner should be to coat it properly. At the light end, women with fine hair do best with a volumizing conditioner and should avoid silicone, which works well to moisturize and seal thicker, coarser or curlier hair but can leave an oil slick on fine hair.

Leave-in conditioners tend to be better for damaged and damage-prone hair because they add moisture without increasing friction from the extra handling required by the rinse-out. But experts warn not to get too hung up on labeling. All the cream rinses and conditioners do the same thing.

    Hair Conditioning Tips

While the length of your hair is desperate for extra moisture, your roots generally aren’t.

    1. In the shower, work conditioner into clean, wet hair. Apply product
