Emily struggled to keep up with her brother and was grateful for the low heels. The heels scraped and crunched as Darren and Emily hurried through the dark, dimly lit stone corridors until they made it back to the underground bar where Emily and Luc had danced together. She knew what came next, and sure enough Darren pulled her to the steel spiral staircase. She looked quickly down at the bar as she hurried to keep up with Darren. No one seemed to be paying them much attention. Perhaps things like this happened all the time at the Bloody Mary.

It always seems that travelling home is quicker than getting somewhere for the first time, and the same was true with getting out of the nightclub. It seemed only moments later that Emily was bathing in the dry chilly air of the night. Darren didn't loosen his grip. He turned right without pausing and began to march her back to the apartment.

What was he? Emily asked, her lips feeling numb as she tried to make sense of everything she had just seen. Already her rational mind was trying to normalize the experience: it was dark, she had been drinking, everything had happened so suddenly, she must have been mistaken.
