My favorite in series so far . However the way it opened with Kate's daughter barging in like her problem was her mother Kate's problem really bothered me and how Kate couldn't tell Durant she needed to wait til the next day to start bothered me as well .
Also when Kate figured out the piano connection and Demarco acted dumbfounded I mean are u kidding me Demarco certainly can't be that ignorant . I mean what purpose does Demarco even serve
Kate is the brains and Demarco can't stop thinking about her next lesbian exploit with a perfect stranger . Why do we even need to know that Demarco is gay it certainly does not help Progress the story .
Also why would Kate know Demarco is Gay Before Demarco mentions it but Kate feels bad that she didn't realize it . Hey Kate you're normal and would expect Demarco to be normal too .
These ultra predictable fight scenes are what I enjoy least about these Kate wise books .
The 5th books story has been the best story so far though .

The characters in this series are fantastic. I just wish the reader had more inflection in their voice.

I love the characters and story with the exception of the same "issue" coming up between Kate and the Director. Seems to follow from story to story.

    2.5 Stars for me!

A few things bug me about this series.

    1. The cardinal rule in evidence collection is that the evidence is used to determine who is guilty. The two agents in this series try to make the evidence fit their suspect. Very bad police work.

    2. The MC constantly gets overpowered by the bad guy.

    3. The MC always has a falling out with her superiors. Yes some of the orders and ridiculous time lines put in place will only hamper an investigation but that drama sequence is getting a bit stale.

    4. In this story, the agents initiate a search without a warrant with zero evidence that a life us in peril. A first year law student could get every bit of evidence found excluded from the trial.

I do like the series overall but let's try some new drama points and attempt to follow procedures that lead to convictions.

    End of rant! ?

Honestly, if you have listened to one, you have listened to them all. Every single book, she has an ultimatum from Alan, her daughter blames her, she gets kicked off the assignment, and her job is on the line. Then she solves the case while breaking the rules, and the people in her life say that they love her job. She blames herself and then is grateful for their forgiveness. It is monotonous.

This one was very predictable and the main character didn't really make me want to root for her. There have been better books in this series but knowing who the killer was on so early in the story made me want to just get to the end as fast as possible to go onto the next book.

Sadly, while the murders were different, the story line is the same..daughter is spoiled, boyfriend makes ultimatum (he knew she was an agent from the start) and the author makes assumptions about what it is like to be an agent (or woman) in her early 50's. I was training teams going to Africa (East and west) in my 50s. I didn't constantly think, "I'm aging out".. and then her partner is a whiney backstabbing young and inexperienced agent who has more creds with the uppers than this renowned seasoned agent. Kate solves the murders within less than a month, has few resources, always comes in at the drop of the hat. I hope book 6 shows her having some backbone, DeMarco needs to get off her high horse, the boss needs to grow a pair, Allen needs to stop trying to hold her back and the daughter needs to show so.e gratitude.

The book begins the same as always. Kate is that friend who talks about the same problem repeatedly. The problem is she is written to be intelligent, top of her feild and marvelled by all in the FBI....so why is she stuck with guilt of working and being a grandma. The author needs to stop this thread, go to therapy, something to stop writing g it in the story. Additionally what's with the ageism? 55, 55, 55 yeah the author needs to get over her character is 55 going on 56 by giving Kate problems that are not real for an agent at her level. The piano discussion is painful.
