About this audiobook

A hot grump. A sunny optimist. And an attraction that's--yep, we're gonna say it--irresistible.

Broody wildlife veterinarian Griffin Foster is done. Done trying to save the world. Done getting attached. He’s been fired twice for standing his ground and now he’s going to be content--by God--in small-town Louisiana, in a small veterinary practice, where there will only be small problems.

Quiet and boring, though? Um, no. He’s been adopted by a loud, crazy Cajun family with a tiny petting zoo for him to care for. Hey, it’s not endangered tigers at a nationally renowned zoo, but a family of otters--and all the gumbo he can eat--isn’t a bad deal.

Until she shows up. Again.

The sunny, gorgeous optimist who stole his heart--and his favorite shirt--two months ago. Who clearly hasn’t heard the word “no” enough in her life. And who is the first woman to put even a tiny crack in his don’t-get-attached wall.

Charlotte “Charlie” Landry is the new marketing consultant for the family swamp-boat tour company and petting zoo. It might not have been her plan, but she is all in, ready to grow the business. Whether the hot, grumpy vet likes it or not.

He doesn’t.

Worse, sparring with his unforgettable one-night stand is more fun than he’s had in a long time.

But watching wears-designer-dresses Charlie find her dream job amongst a bunch of goats, alpacas, and otters is a surprise.

And her helping him find his passion again is...well, irresistible.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Erin Nicholas has been writing romances almost as long as she’s been reading them. To date, she’s written over thirty sexy, contemporary novels that have been described as “toe-curling,” “enchanting,” “steamy,” and “fun.” She adores reluctant heroes, imperfect heroines, and happily ever afters. Erin lives in the Midwest, where she enjoys spending time with her husband (who only wants to read the sex scenes in her books), her kids (who will never read the sex scenes in her books), and her family and friends (who claim to be “shocked” by the sex scenes in her books).

Didn’t really care for female narrator. Was a struggle to get through her chapters. Story was fun.

I enjoyed the different settings this story brought to the forefront. The grumpy vet and chatty overdressed FMC returning to her home town after a failed trip to Paris. Griffin was the perfect grump, preferring to chat with the animals than the locals and anyone who probably walked on two legs.

This story had so much potential and was a lot better than I also expected. Charlie was sometimes way too overdramatic and I definitely believe this highlighted itself during the main conflict scene. It wasn't believable enough to be relatable to the reader. There could at times be too much internal dialogue and the FMC focused a lot on looks. I did want more of an emotional connection to build between the two characters and this unfortunately didn't seem to happen at any point in the book.

The animals were very cute and funny. They added an element to the characters that I don't believe we would have been able to see without them in it. Griffin's personality came out around the animals and later on around Charlie. I wanted more from the ending. I thought it was very quickly swiped over and didn't really add much to the story or the rest of the series for it to continue.

I'm just going to start writing this review, and maybe it will help me decide if I'm giving this 3 or 4 stars, because right now I'm conflicted.

This book was not as good as it could have been.
But it was better than it could have been too.
    If that makes sense.

I read a lot of reviews complaining about excessive chattiness and internal dialogue and back story and such, right from the start. But I have to admit, that's the only reason the first chapter or so worked for me, because I am NOT a fan of instalust and one night stands. The fact that it took longer to READ the first scenes of the book than it would have taken for them to play out in real time actually helped me feel more emotionally invested in their hookup.

I also don't like relationships that are based solely on the physical, but for some reason I found myself appreciating the FMC's straightforwardness about her attraction for the MMC. As far as that goes, the way it was written worked for me.

Dr. Foster, Sugar, and all the animals were adorable, and I loved the little conversations the fmc overheard him having with them. When she was swooning over him standing there in his scrubs holding a little boy's puppy, SO WAS I. I want a grumpy vet! Where's MY grumpy vet?!

A lot of reviews said that they didn't like Charlie, but I kinda did, even though she's not my usual favorite kind of h. I liked her spunk, and I liked reading the ideas that she had for the family business. I liked the idea of her drawing the H out, and I liked the idea of him settling her down.

Some people weren't fans of the end of the book, but I'll be honest....I was very distracted by outside things going on while I was listening to that portion of the audiobook, so I won't comment on it.

I think my final (personal) rating is 3.5, but because I found the book to be well-written and unique, for the purpose of rating here, I'll round up to a 4.
