About this audiobook

One man cannot take on an empire.

Or rather, he can try—but it should come as no surprise when he’s crushed by the vast powers arrayed against him. Caius Oppita knows this, but after what he’s seen, it suits him better to go down fighting than to crawl on his hands and knees.

The empire he’s served faithfully since he was a boy now wants him dead, and the lover he thought he could trust has betrayed him in the worst possible way. Maybe Caius can’t win the fight he’s about to undertake, but he’ll damn well drag the imperial family's corruption into the light of day if it kills him.

And if the battle takes him to the same underbelly of the capital where his former lover fled after ripping Caius’ world apart? Well, it won’t be the first time this hardened general has engaged in combat on two fronts.

Not all enemies are what they seem. Sometimes the course of a war can turn on the smallest thing.

Narrator Cornell Collins delivered the first two installments of the M/M epic Fantasy Master of Hounds. Book one’s been on my waiting list for months. As soon as I saw book two was available, I thought, WTF, I’m so sweet and bloody saturated with syrupy contemporary romances. I needed some blood and gore to balance it out and flatten my crinkles. I was not disappointed. The tale sucked me in and held my attention from the start. The mystery about the Hellhounds became apparent near the end, and the author hid it so well, the big reveal was superb. Unfortunately, book one stops there, and I thank my lucky stars for waiting till book two was available. Maybe I read it in a review or something, thank you whoever warned me, and it bloody paid off. Book two picks up right after the end of book one, and this time we got to know more secondary characters.

The plot thickens and I decided I like this author very much. The stories flow easily and the points of humor are welcomed, but also pulled me into liking the characters even more. The richness of their personalities is one of the reasons I will seek out the rest of R.A. Steffans books. For the perverts yes, there is enough sex to satisfy those (like me), who need some man-on-man loving to survive a day. I liked the personalities of both protagonists, Decian and Caius impressed me most by both being strong male characters. They are attracted to each other on equal footing, although the sexy big age gap, there was no need to dominate or be dominated, just being together was all they wanted. The voices the narrator gave each was also a big male presence, the younger was confident and strong and not at all intimidated by his older lover or even his shitty life experiences. He is witty and reminds me of fresh linen on your bed after an achingly long day. I was happy to get to know a genderfluid person, maybe trans. But this was another reason why these books worked for me. It’s deliciously LGBTQIA+ friendly.

Cornell played the fantastical and dramatic tension with his voice like a harp. Listening to him narrate fantasy is a joy. His deep masculine baritone makes mystical creatures like Hellhounds come to life. He wields his voice so I can differentiate between characters, and male and female distinctively as well. The sweet sound of his English dialect enriches the fantasy itself, which creates an authentic or antique listening experience.

Book two sadly ends in another cliffhanger, but I’m okay with that, I had my fill of this and I will let it simmer until book three is available on audio.

I do recommend these books. If you can’t handle cliffhangers, wait for the whole series before starting it.

    Happy Listening
