About this audiobook

"Don't Cry for Me is a perfect song."—Jesmyn Ward

A Black father makes amends with his gay son through letters written on his deathbed in this wise and penetrating novel of empathy and forgiveness, for fans of Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robert Jones Jr. and Alice Walker

As Jacob lies dying, he begins to write a letter to his only son, Isaac. They have not met or spoken in many years, and there are things that Isaac must know. Stories about his ancestral legacy in rural Arkansas that extend back to slavery. Secrets from Jacob's tumultuous relationship with Isaac's mother and the shame he carries from the dissolution of their family. Tragedies that informed Jacob's role as a father and his reaction to Isaac's being gay.

But most of all, Jacob must share with Isaac the unspoken truths that reside in his heart. He must give voice to the trauma that Isaac has inherited. And he must create a space for the two to find peace.

With piercing insight and profound empathy, acclaimed author Daniel Black illuminates the lived experiences of Black fathers and queer sons, offering an authentic and ultimately hopeful portrait of reckoning and reconciliation. Spare as it is sweeping, poetic as it is compulsively readable, Don't Cry for Me is a monumental novel about one family grappling with love's hard edges and the unexpected places where hope and healing take flight.

Oh Man! This was for my soul. I saw my Dad in this novel. The man he was raised to be. Great man but, you know, he tries. I felt my Mom in this story, how she supports me in everything I do! This novel made me miss my Grandma! Such a sweet as pie lady and it also made me miss my very best friend who died 9/18/20. Her love was enough. What an amazing novel! Thanks!

He captured black families so well especially from rural Arkansas. I throughly enjoyed the book even though it was tough and uncomfortable and even painful to listen, but I stuck it out because the message was so poignant! Time waits for no man!

A terminally ill father writes a letter to his
estranged, gay son explaining their history
    & his mistakes in fathering
Poignant at times yet a bit didactic.

Very deep, black men had a stand of life and that is what they live by. This generation is different. Love and except your family regardless if you except there life style. You can’t change a person but you can give them unconditional love. Everyone deserves to be loved regardless of their choices. Fathers and mothers love your children.

This is one of the most powerful books that I have ever listened to. I cried for all of the mistakes that we as a people have made and for our lack of emotional vocabulary to say to others how we truly feel. It is so tragic that Jacob couldn't say all that he wrote, but it is good that he was able to write it. I could see so many of the people I grew up with in this book, and thank the author for closure.

This book is ultimately about generational trauma and Black boy and manhood.
The main character wasn't likeable at all and I didn't like how terrible the main character was. With each confession I just became more and more irritated with the book and him. He was somewhat a grey area character, but to me he was just an unlikeable asshole.

He often complained that he wanted his child to "be a man" and be confident and have strength but every chance the main character has at reaching out to his child to reconcile their relationship, he shys away. So now he's the meek one? Yeah, I don't like that hypocrisy, with as much grief as he gave his son for not acting like "a man", he could have stood up and "been a man" when it came to connecting with his son.

I felt sorry for his family because they had to deal with him. I understand that he is trying to learn and do better as a person, he's so unlikeable that I don't care if he's trying to become a better person. I'm trying to be understanding to his character but it's hard for me.

My friends felt more sympathy than I did for the main character and maybe you will too.

    I'm giving this a 3 out of 5 stars.
