This was a well written plot, with many layers to it (in my opinion). I also liked the characters - they were believable. While it's not necessary to read the first book in this series, I'd recommend starting with it: A Cold Dark Place. And although I did prefer the first book a bit more - gave it five out of five, this is also a good story.
