About this audiobook

From Nora Roberts comes the #1 New York Times bestseller Shelter in Place (June 2018)a powerful tale of heart, heroism...and propulsive suspense.

It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived.

The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. In the years that followed, one would dedicate himself to a law enforcement career. Another would close herself off, trying to bury the memory of huddling in a ladies' room, helplessly clutching her cell phone--until she finally found a way to pour her emotions into her art.

But one person wasn't satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait--and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

Ok, I REALLY wanted to like this. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just SO dull. It drags on and on and there is no heat. January LaVoy is great, as always. But even she couldn’t keep it going for me. I had to quit 1/2 way through.

There's nothing to say about Nora Robert's that hasn't already been said. The book was as usual great! The narrator is definitely someone I'd listen to again. I've quit listening and returned books I've read again and again, because of the narrators chosen.

    **trigger warning **
If you or someone that’s close to you has been a victim of gun violence or mass shooting this may not be the read for you.
After I made it through the initial shock and awe of the first couple of chapters this was an absolute amazing read. I could not stop listening. If pesky things called life had not gotten in the way I would have listened straight through. By far the best Nora Roberts book I have ever read

This is the second time I've read this book - first time was in print when it first came out a couple of years ago, this time as an audio book. Just as good the second time, and well narrated by January La Voie (sp?).

I always enjoy reading a Nora Roberts novel! She always gives life to the characters, the plots, the romance which is sometimes predictable, but which is exactly what you would hope for :) Another great story from a great story teller! I also loved the narrator, January LaVoy ! She literally gave a face to each character with her subtle change in voice. I would definately rate her up there with Susan Ericksen! An emotional & enjoyable read (or audio).

I almost stopped listening, after the first part focused on a mall shooting, but the story did become more interesting later on, and the weaving of characters life kept my attention. And I enjoyed the quirkiness of the CeCe character. However, once two of the main protagonists became involved, the rest of the story was very predictable.

I bawled for hours reading the start of this book and the roller coaster kept coming after that. So many characters to love and fear for! Gripping to have such a seemingly banal foe as the mastermind.

Shelter in Place opens with a shooting at mall in suburban Maine. Reed Quartermaine is a college student taking a break from his job as a waiter at a restaurant in the mall when the shooting starts. When he sees a little boy crying, he bravely grabs the boy and hides with him in a kiosk. Simone Knox, high school senior, takes a restroom break in the middle of a movie she is attending with her two best friends when she hears the popping sound she realizes is gunfire and calls nine-one-one from her stall where she hides in the restroom. When the shooting finally subsides, dozens of people have been injured or killed.
The rest of the story follows the lives of the people affected by the shooting. Reed becomes a police officer as a result of meeting one of the first-responders, and after several traumatic years, Simone finally finds her place in the world as an artist. The two meet for the first time when several of the survivors of the original attack begin dying under mysterious circumstances.
With all of the shootings in the news lately, this is a very timely story, giving insight and thoughtful consideration of those left behind after a tragedy such as this. In her usual style, Roberts brings the characters and their stories to life while telling a tale of courage and love. Overall a very entertaining and thought-provoking story.

My review: Interesting premise, but very slow to get into. Became more interesting in the last 100 pgs. or so, but the ending was rushed and not very satisfying.

[4.5]I've been thinking this book over for about a week now, and I'm still not completely sure of how I feel about it. This is one of the most complicated books I've ever read. The amount of thought and detail that went into every single aspect of this book is mind-blowing. It did take me a while to get through it, but that was completely my fault and had nothing to do with the book itself. This was my first book by Nora Roberts, and I believe I picked the perfect book to start out with. When I was at Walmart, I noticed this cover almost immediately. I love anything that focuses on such serious and important topics, so I ultimately chose this one and my expectations were extremely high. She surpassed the expectations I had.The storyline itself - mass shooting leading to a serial killing - was what completely sold me on this book, and it did not disappoint. The first few pages focused on the shooting, which was described in such detail I had to take a break for a couple hours before continuing. The entire shooting was completely heartbreaking and eye-opening. I'm not sure I'll be visiting either a mall nor movie theatre - especially one in a mall - for quite a while. The rest of part one was about the healing of those affected in the shooting, which again, was rather heartbreaking. Nora Roberts truly captured what trauma feels like and how it can change a person. The second part was focused on the years following the shooting and the time leading up to the string of murders. The ability of the murderer did seem a little too strong, however, it also felt extremely possible; psychopaths and sociopaths are smart and plan things out in so much depth and detail it's a bit terrifying. This is also when the romance started. The third part focused more on the relationship and downfall of the murderer. This part held my attention, and I could hardly put it down once I reached part three. I personally found it interesting to watch the murderer slowly lose control and patience, which leads to being caught. The characters were very complex, had a lot of depth that I wasn't really expecting. I loved Reed and Cici so much. Cici reminded me a lot of my mom, and her relationship with Simone reminded me of ours. The dedication and love they put into their careers and relationships was beautiful, and the entire time the story was focused on one of them, I was just in awe.Simone was also an amazing character, and I found her personal growth inspiring. I'm a sucker for a female MC who can bring herself out of struggling and completely strive, and that's exactly what Simone was. She went through pure hell, yet she still ended up in a healthy relationship and with a healthy coping mechanism. As for the main romance of the book, I found it both cute and also annoying. Reed joking about running away with Cici started out as funny, but over the course of their relationship, it got kind of annoying. I also thought it was a predictable relationship. From the second the book started, I sort of assumed who the relationship mentioned on the back of the book would be between, and to my disappointment, I was correct. There were times when I loved their relationship, though; they could be pretty cute together.Overall, I really did love this book. The only thing keeping it from being a five star book is the relationship. Otherwise, it's one of the best thrillers I've read. If the subject of mass shootings and serial murders don't trigger you, I highly suggest reading this book.Trigger Warnings: This book contains/mentions mass shootings, murder, sexual scenes, and trauma.

I love Roberts who has written some of my favorite romance novels and series. This offering though seemed different - less like a romance and more just a novel. The story feels like it centers more on Reed than on Simone or their romance together. In fact, the character I feel I know the most about is Simone's grandmother CiCi; we certainly get more of her family backstory than we do for either Reed or Simone. The exploration of the impact of a mass shooting is interesting, though I was surprised we didn't get more about some other characters (such as Brady for example). Overall it was a good read, but not at all what I expected from a Nora Roberts book. Recommend for the story but be forewarned that this isn't really a traditional romance novel.

At a mall outside Portland, Maine, three teenagers came in shooting. Many people were killed or injured. The police killed the shooters. Three teenagers, friends Simone and MI, along with Reed Quartermaine, survived. Reed became a police chief of a small island near Portland, and Simone a great sculptor. MI became a doctor. Many years later, Patricia, the sister of one on the shooters emerges to seek revenge for the death of her brother. It turns out that she was the one who planned the attack on the mall. She begins to kill anyone who gained fame or notoriety from the shooting, now several years ago. Reed and Simone have fallen in love and they know that Patricia will come after them too. There are two stories that run simultaneously. The love story of Reed and Simone, and the saga of Patricia's kills. I liked this book which meshed the two stories together in a good way. The reader can enjoy the romance but at the same time, be pulled into the mystery and suspense of the crimes of Patricia. The reader anticipates her coming after Reed and Simone and is kept on edge about when and how. This thriller is fast paced and hard to put down.
