About this audiobook

Reject the diet mentality that thrives on restrictions and deprivation.

Learn how to lose and manage weight with simple, livable steps.

Not a day goes by that the average American doesn’t think about weight. Yet the weight epidemic continues to grow. Today there are more obese individuals than those who are merely overweight. So what’s wrong?

In Full, celebrated bariatric surgeon Michael Snyder offers an insider’s perspective on weight loss: it’s not the surgery that creates success in his patients, it’s what they do afterward that counts! Using the science of fullness and introducing a new definition of healthy, he brings us powerful weight-control tools that are rooted in our physiology and proves that the undeniable feeling of fullness is the ultimate secret in the quest for weight loss – if you know how to effortlessly reach it without breaking the calorie bank or fighting your emotions. In Full, you will learn how to:

• Choose from a variety of practical strategies to achieve sustainable weight loss no matter what kind of foods you like to eat.

• End the confusion over portion control by synching visual and physiological cues of fullness.

• Be full with less food but equally as satisfied (if not more so!).

• Apply a cheat prescription so you can still say yes to indulgences and temptations without feeling like a failure.

• Take advantage of the five intentional steps of digestion to gain natural control of how—and how much—you eat.

• Find fulfillment in a physical activity that is inexpensive, easy, and convenient.

With Dr. Snyder’s rich body of experience and techniques, and these new strategies and definitions, you will move from self-hatred to self-understanding, from persistent dieting to living true to yourself, and from being unhappily overweight to being a healthy individual who knows a happy weight better than a scale does.

For anyone who seriously wants to change their eating habits, this book can be helpful in a practical way. Approached from a scientific aspect, the contents may be a bit more than the casual reader can digest, but for those who paid attention in science and biology classes, it makes sense. Unfortunately, someone borrowed the book before I was almost at the end, so this review won't be complete since the book never reappeared. In our food obsessed culture, A Life Without Dieting is something to aspire to. The information is useable and applicable - but this is NOT a quick fix for being overweight, rather it's a pragmatic look at how one's body works and why the body does what it does with the food you eat.

The author does a pretty good job of keeping your interested in a topic that could get pretty long in the mouth for most. While many of the things that are stated in the book are common knowlege, some of the ideas make you wonder why you had never thought of them before. It's a good book to get your mind around why we have such a hard time with food and what we can do to help ourselves.

This is a wonderful "diet book" that will have you thinking about your diet and weight as never before. Dr. Snyder is a bariatric surgeon who has done more than 2700 procedures as of the writing of his book. He has a unique way of looking at dieting (unique in that we do not seem to consider his strategies when we go n a diet. Maybe one or two but never the complete and easy methods he presents). Actually, Dr. Snyder does not call his methods dieting, though you could very well lose 100 or more pounds trying his methods. The main ideas are very simplistic: watch portion sizes and stop eating when full. I know, I said it too, "Duh!" Keep reading and the wisdom in his "madness" shines. First, the good doctor explains why dieting is simply a myth. One reason, which does make sense, is diets themselves keeping you on a diet. He claims that dieting plans are a myth not designed to help you lose weight for any great length of time, and thus they are the enemy in losing weight, not food. Dr. Snyder does an excellent job discussing the anatomy of the stomach, never getting boring or dry. Bariatic patients can only eat a small amount at a time because they have very little stomach left to fill. Dr. Snyder states how to use the same strategies, minus the band. This book is engrossing, engaging, and enlightening. Dr. Snyder factsare based in science and observation of his patients, not commerce. Included are exercises and tools to get you started correctly. He explains why weight returns with diets and how to keep the pounds off forever. Dr. Snyder is well-respected and most logical. In layman terms he explains how to lose weight that is sustainable. You could actually start your new eating habits before you finish the book. Finish the book first. Trust me, you will not put this one down until the last page is turned.note: received from publisher

Michael Snyder, a bariatric surgeon, urges us to reject the diet mentality. He states that the diet industry is built on the notion of failure and that the cycle of dieting and binging is unhealthy. He sets out some commonsense guidelines and strategies. He does not set forth a meal plan, list of foods you can or can't have. He urges portion control and exercise. Overall, I found nothing new in his book. Although his strategies are practical, I'm guessing the average dieter has already thought about and utilized most of them.

I generally don't read self help books. I did, however, request this one and thoroughly enjoy it.I like that it isn't a typical "diet, weight-loss" book. This book offers smart tips and facts that were more common sense than most of these types of books tend to be.I liked this book and will read it again with more than just the review in mind!!!

I won this book thru Library Thing’s Member Giveaway and thought it was one of the better self-help books I have read. It is written by a Doctor who specializes in Gastric Bypass Surgery and he offers helpful insights into weigh loss principles and maintenance. I like the fact that he does not put a bunch of medical terms into the book, instead; making it easier to read for the common person. I learned a lot from reading this book and will adapt some of the author’s tips into my current diet program.

This book strongly advocates weight control involving controlling the kinds and quantities of food eaten. While not really a diet book, it focuses on "mindful eating", a thoughful approach to eating that requires a deliberate effort in what foods are eaten and how they are eaten, and a way of life that includes planning meals, exercise and a realistic goal for weight loss.I was impressed by the common sense approach to weight loss with its system of eating healthy foods that are generally minimally processed and contain balanced nutrition, an abundance of protein and only the calories required for physical needs. Calorie counting is dropped in preference for protion sizes. Even cheating is allowed in a limited way as a psychological device to avoid undue stress, discouragement and social ostracism.Exercise is included in the system both to increase general fitness and muscle mass, and as a device to improve a person's mental state. Mental health and conditioning is also important and it is pointed out that many people eat not because they are hungry but as a response to stress, depression and social circumstances.I was pleased to find such topics as the importance of BMI over just weight loss or size reduction. I also noted references to the health benefits of weight loss such as increased lifespan and the cure of some types of diabetes.I found the book fascinating and especially appreciated the science that is behind things I'd previously learned beneficial. I highly recommend the book to anyone that has ever struggled with their weight or tried numerous weight loss programs.

Dr. Michael Snyder has conducted thousands of bariatric surgical procedures and coached many more patients in their struggle against obesity. In “Full: A life Without Dieting,” he shares hard won strategies applicable to all in addressing unwanted weight and leading healthier lives. In accessible laymen’s terms, he provides the science undergirding his recommendations as to why these strategies work. Beware: if you are looking for a silver bullet or quick pill for easily shedding weight, You won’t find not a “get-thin-quick” scheme – easily adopted and easily ignored -- here. Dr. Snyder generally derides the popular ‘diets’ out there. Citing various studies, he points out that most people will follow one, only to re-gain the weight. Instead, citing the science behind what makes us feel ‘full’ and limit our eating, he outlines effective strategies which he hopes will become sustainable lifelong tools for living. Once these tools become ingrained, they are less likely to be set aside along like whatever diet has fallen out of fashion. Those who follow Weight Watchers will find some thing that are familiar to them – planning ahead, drinking water, “filling” foods, portion control, starting with moderate activity and even the ability to “cheat” occasionally. However, Snyder’s strategies don’t require the constant adding up of points which bedevil many. Card carrying members of the Clean Plate Club, like me, may have learned since childhood to ignore the body’s signals of fullness, relying instead on the gleam of porcelain to indicate the end of a meal. I found Dr. Synder’s chapters on the physiology of fullness to be especially helpful and plan to re-read those again in the future.
