About this audiobook

From an author who Stephen King calls “an absolute master” comes a “heart-clutching psychological thriller” (People) about a young female police officer facing danger on all fronts—from a clever victim of abuse, skeptical colleagues on the force, and even her own father.

Philomena McCarthy is an ambitious police officer with the elite Metropolitan Police in London, responding to a domestic violence call. Tempe Brown is a bloodied young woman and the mistress of a decorated and intimidating London detective, Darren Goodall. Philomena and Tempe strike up a tentative friendship, determined to protect each other from Goodall, but something isn’t quite right about the stories Tempe tells and the secrets she keeps. Yet the young officer is drawn into Tempe’s world, unsure of what is real or invented. After a bungled break-in and an unsolved murder, Philomena finds herself trapped—with her career, her impending wedding, and her very survival in doubt.

Robotham’s brilliant ability to render complex characters, both good and bad, keeps readers unsure of whom to trust, “maintain[ing] an air of excruciating suspense” (The Washington Post)—until the very last page.

There’s a lot going on in this book - a few things get a bit out of hand and/or glazed over but overall an engaging and enjoyable read. Solid narration, good pacing and well developed characters. Recommend the listen.

The story is well told, and the narration is great. Big Michael Robotham fan, but I really struggled with this one. Phil is one of the few female cops in her station. She is called out to a domestic dispute call. When she gets too close to the victim and the abuser happens to be a decorated cop she is set on a path she did not expect. As only MR can spin a story, there are all kinds of smaller stories weaving in and out of each other. It's full of surprises and lots of twists. I struggled with this main character she is supposed to be such a strong woman, but she just kept making choices that seemed so wrong. The ending was a hard one to swallow as well but does resolve the story.

She was the victim, but how much of what she said was really the truth? When police officer Philomena McCarthy and her partner answer a call to a domestic disturbance between what is unknown to her as a highly established detective and his mistress, she finds herself be-friending the victim. But what happens when she finds herself becoming the victim, slowly seeming to lose everything she's worked so hard for?
Thank you to Netgalley, Scribner and Michael Robothom for the opportunity to read and review this book. It was a but lengthy but it was definitely gripping for me. I loved Philomena's character and had some serious empathy for her and everything that was happening to her. There were some good twists in this one and the ending definitely caught me off guard. Though it was a lengthy book, it was a pretty good paced book and didn't leave any loose ends. I enjoyed this one, though it did have some sketchy parts that creeped me out. If you're into dark twisty psychological thrillers, this one is for you. I rate this ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A well crafted story, as always from this Author. And the voice talent was commendable. Being the father of millennials, 2 + 2, there was slight unease with the wrap up, a rather shallow veneered acceptable social appliqué most likely arranged by the publisher. No “brave new world” here. Still pleased with the avoidance of author derangement syndrome currently afflicting many who fashion tales for our enjoyment. I look forward to enjoying more of Mr. R’s efforts. Highly recommended.

Brainless. Well written. Main character is a little naive. Perfect audiobook for roadtrip or housework.

I'm a big fan of this author, but I really felt like this book drug on and on. The end was good (at least there was that). It seemed like it took 4/5 of the book to even get to a legit plot. I could not get engaged.

Fascinating. Each character is well written, relatable and believable, which is a rarity is thrillers. The different story lines are rich and complex on their own. Truly amazing.

Missed a lot of it. It's like they took sentences out by muting the audiobook and then I'd just have to sit and wait for it to come back on

I liked the plot—the book moved at a good pace. I was super annoyed by a decision the main character made towards the end; otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.
