About this audiobook

A heart-pounding new series set in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world, about a scientist fighting to save the gray wolves—and getting caught in a deadly trap herself...

Lydia Susi is passionate about protecting wolves in their natural habitat. When a hotel chain develops a tract of land next to the preserve, Lydia is one of the most vocal opponents of the project—and becomes a target.

One night, a shadowy figure threatens Lydia’s life in the forest, and a new hire at the Wolf Study Project comes from out of nowhere to save her. Daniel Joseph is both mysterious, and someone she intrinsically wants to trust. But is he hiding something?

As the stakes get higher, and one of Lydia’s colleagues is murdered, she must decide how far she will go to protect the wolves. Then a shocking revelation about Daniel challenges Lydia’s reality in ways she could never have predicted. Some fates demand courage, while others require even more, with no guarantees. Is she destined to have true love...or will a soul-shattering loss ruin her forever?

Loved the revisit to the black dagger brothers and am intrigued by this new direction! As a couple Lydia and Daniel were instantly drawn to each other. What surprises in the end.

Well written and an unseen twist, glad to know the history continues along side the BDB characters. Is a must to read!

I've never read a JR Ward before and clearly this was not the one to start with. (A) I thought Ward wrote standalones. I'd never have started this had I known it was a cliffhanger. (B) This was hardly a paranormal. Sure, there were a few moments at the end or in the subplot (which really felt disconnected from the main plot), but it was more like a romantic suspense. (C) At least one twist was really obvious, so it seemed a little silly Ward waited so long for the reveal. As for the other twist: it just didn't really add up. Maybe I had to read Ward's past books first to get it? Regardless, it just didn't work for me.

Mostly thats because of the whole star-crossed lovers feeling throughout. 'We can never be together' stuff constantly cranked up the melodrama, but it just didn't work. Ward keeps readers in the dark about everyone's motivations for the majority of the book, so it was hard to care about the characters. Lydia was the only one who was explored in any depth, but she had some serious TSTL moments that ruined her persona. And the hero, Daniel, was ok, but that's it. Just okay. He was supposed to be so tough, but he really only had a single scene in which he did anything remotely heroic, and that one was ethically questionable. All that buildup, and then it all just fell flat on its face.

Yuck. This might be the only JR Ward I ever read, if this book represents her style.

Started out strong, but the end seemed rushed and didn’t feel entirely well connected. Poor flow. I tried to check out the next in the series’s and didn’t make it past the first two chapters.

    *POSSIBLE SPOILER*

Amazing book. If you love steamy romance but with a good story this is an audio book for you. *POSSIBLE SPOILER* There is a suicide middleish of the story, I really feel like there should be a trigger warning for this. It's not overly graphic but it's still intense.
