About this audiobook

"On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is... different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, ""normal"" is a bit of a stretch for Dina.

And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night... Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

Author

Ilona Andrews

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian, and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored four New York Times and USA Today bestselling series: the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

This is by far my favorite Ilona Andrews series. And being enacted by a full cast elevates the experience even further. Highly recommend.

Love this book and love full cast audio productions. only reason this is not 5 stars is they felt the need to include mouth noises when the characters were eating or drinking. all the lips smacking, slurping and chewing noises were gross and i don't understand why they felt the need to include them. thankfully there isn't a lot of eating in this book, but i know food plays a huge role in some of the upcoming books so i'm just shuddering thinking about it.

I really enjoyed this book. The voice acting, music and sound affects really added to the tone and feeling. There were a few sound affects, usually for animals I thought sounded corny but that is my only gripe.

The world is well written with different cultures, factions, individuals and their beliefs and each one having history. The author did an amazing job giving us plenty to chew on but keeping all the information relevant while leaving thing open for more. And the monsters feel like monsters. The creatures feel intimidating not just because of the way they are described but because of character reactions and struggles. The world feels inhabited and not like it revolves only around the protagonist.

Speaking of which, I really liked the protagonist. She gives a vibe of that hospitable host welcoming guests to her door with fresh squeezed lemonade and a shotgun on the porch for troublemakers.

Every character's strength and weakness is clearly established and how they solve problems is different alone than when together.

Overall the novel was fun, I did laugh outloud a few times. There was no shock or twist. But it's a pretty short fun ride.
