About this audiobook

Monsters, gods, and mayhem...

Police Chief Delaney Reed can handle the Valkyries, werewolves, gill-men and other paranormal creatures who call the small beach town of Ordinary, Oregon their home. It's the vacationing gods who keep her up at night.

With the famous rhubarb festival right around the corner, small-town tensions, tempers, and godly tantrums are at an all-time high. The last thing Delaney needs is her ex-boyfriend reappearing just when she's finally caught the attention of Ryder Bailey, the one man she should never love.

No, scratch that. The actual last thing she needs is a dead body washing ashore, especially since the dead body is a god.

Catching a murderer, wrestling a god power, and re-scheduling the apocalypse? Just another day on the job in Ordinary. Falling in love with her childhood friend while trying to keep the secrets of her town secret? That's gonna take some work.

Ordinary, Oregon is a tourist town on the coast that caters to gods and other supernatural creatures. When the gods go on vacation they set aside their powers and they live as mortals. Take up your powers and you can’t come back for a year. Werewolves and vampires live there as well and have agreed not to fight. Delaney Reed is the chief of police and with the help of her two sisters they try to keep everything from being discovered by normal people. Granted some normal people are in on the secret but most of the town doesn’t know. When a vacationing dies Delaney has to discover who killed him and also find a new host for his god powers. There is a bit of a love triangle going on as well but doesn’t get dragged out. This was nice, fun book to listen to on audio and the multicast made it very easy to keep track of everyone.

Ordinary, Oregon is just a small coastal town, known mainly for its yearly rhubarb festival. At least in the human world anyway. It is also the place where gods can shed their power for a bit and take a vacation and where all the creatures are welcome to move in. There is only one condition (for them all): find a job, even if you are bad at it. And of course, they all are mortal while in town. A year ago Delaney Reed became the police chief after her father, who was the old chief, died. Her two sisters are also policewomen - and all 3 also have special powers allowing them to deal with the supernatural community. The festival security is about to stretch the already understaffed police department resources. Add an ex boyfriend, who seems to want Delaney back, and Ryder, a man she used to be in love with and who had just returned back to town and that last thing Delaney needs a dead god on hands. Unfortunately for her, that's exactly what she gets - so on top of everything else, she needs to find a mortal to accept the god power. Hilarity ensues. The book is pure fluff - Delaney seems to lose all her brain cells when Ryder or Cooper (the ex) come anywhere near her (and she spends half of the rest of the time pining for Ryder). And yet somehow the whole thing works - I wanted to hit her on the head for missing the obvious multiple times (but she did have an excuse in this book) so we will see how it goes in the next day. But even if it remains the same way, I would still read the next novel.

Death and Relaxation(Ordinary Magic #1)by Devon MonkThis book has a town in Oregon that has gods, supernatural creatures of all kinds, and regular humans. Only a select few humans know of the gods and creatures. The main characters are sisters in law enforcement, the oldest taking her father's place as a bridge between gods and creatures/ man . She keeps the law.Her ex boyfriend returns just as she finally gets the friendly with her lifetime crush. A dead body is found dead and it's not just any body but one of the gods!Great cast of characters, interesting concept, and kept me entertained throughout!

I've read the beginning of this - interrogating the gill-man - several times; I don't know whether it was published separately (seems unlikely, there's no conclusion to that part) or I've started and put down this book several times. This time I went a bit farther, and was drawn in. The premise is fascinating; the gods come to vacation in this small town, leaving their power behind them. The inhabitants of the town include the (for now) mortal gods, various mythical creatures (I liked her handling of the vampires and werewolves...), and mortals, most of whom haven't a clue who their neighbors are. And lots of rhubarb - every small town has to have some quirky festival, right? Everything does seem to pile on at once (explosions, murder, romance, and the Rhubarb Rally, all in one week. And the anniversary of her father's death). Delaney is amazingly obtuse on a) what's going on with Cooper and b) what's going on with Ryder... romance, even ex-romance, seems to shut down her brains. It's fluff, but it's _really_good_ fluff - I went and got the second book already.

3.5. Didn't care for the romance in this one, but the take on the gods was fun and the mystery was fun. The romance was too overdone in spots and towards the end the whole separation was contrived.

Previous to reading this book I had read Monk’s Allie Besckstrom series (liked it), House Immortal series (loved it), Broken Magic series (loved it), and Age of Steam series (it was okay). This is the first book in her Ordinary Magic series and I absolutely loved it. This book was just so much fun to read.Delaney Reed is police chief in the town of Ordinary, a town where Gods relinquish their powers to become mortals and take a vacation. Ordinary also has normal folks and a bunch of tourists who come out for the Rhubarb Festival. When people/gods start dying and rhubarb gets blown up, Delaney knows she’s going to have her hands full. Then Death shows up wanting to take a vacation and things get even weirder.I loved the idea of this town and the mystery behind the murders. The characters in here were amazing and I loved the witty banter. This book was an excellent balance of world-building, mythology, mystery, magic, and romance.Delaney and her sisters are intriguing characters that really pull you in. Ordinary itself is absolutely fascinating. The writing was easy to read and the whole package was highly entertaining and amusing.Overall I really really loved this book and have already purchased the 2nd book in the series. I would highly recommend this series to fans of creative investigative urban fantasy.

Delaney is the oldest of three sisters dedicated to policing the town of Ordinary, Oregon; a town with the not-so-ordinary distinction of vacation land of the gods. As chief of police, she makes sure that the gods and mortals alike abide by the law. As a Reed, she makes sure each god checks his or her power at the city line because while they're in Ordinary, they are mortals. And if one dies while they're in Ordinary, Delaney is the holder of that god's power until she can find a mortal willing to take it on. So when she finally gets a chance at her lifelong crush the same week her ex-boyfriend shows back up, the Rhubarb Festival begins and a god is found dead, Delaney's having bad week. Really well written with a moderately well-plotted murder mystery, great characters, awesome setting and a really original (I think) premise, I'm surprised the author had to self-publish this. I had a great time reading it. I'd have rated it even higher except I grew frustrated with Delaney's obtuseness when it came to finding the new mortal for Heimdall's powers and I really disliked the trite direction Monk took the romance; it verged on formulaic. Still, I loved the sisters and I'm a bit worried about how much I liked the character of Death. Why is death always the most interesting character? There's at least one more book, out this month, and it will pain me to do it, but I'll buy it from Amazon if I must; I want to know what happens next. (It's like the Urban Fantasy version of Eureka!)
