About this audiobook

Stephen's god died on the longest day of the year . . .

Three years later, Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong. Now the pair must navigate a web of treachery, beset on all sides by spies and poisoners, while a cryptic killer stalks one step behind . . .

From the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of Swordheart and The Twisted Ones comes a saga of murder, magic, and love on the far side of despair.

This was a fun and sex fantasy romp with a mystery. Highly enjoyable.

Kingfisher steps in where Sir Terry Pratchett left off. She's a wonderful writer of the humorous, the absurd, and the heartfelt. Her worldbuilding keeps me returning to each new book, and her world of the Clockwork Boys, Anougat City (audiobook, sorry for any misspellings), and the Rat priests is enchanting.

40-something paladin and 30-something old woman are now in love. That sentence is the genre that Kingfisher has specialized in. This book suffers from centering around the least interesting characters, Grace and Stephen. They seem to bond over acting like teenagers ,holding petty grudges and being sexually opressed togheter. The stories and plots in the book have little to do with eachother and what i thought was the plot for most of the book just kind of fizzles out.
The supporting cast and lore is what keeps me from giving this a 1-star. The comraderie of the paladins and the story of their dead god far outshines the main plot and characters. If only there was more of that and less of Grace and Stephens bumbling about…

Of course I already love T. Kingfisher's SAINT OF STEEL series, and Joel Richards's gentle narration is the perfect treatment for this story about two broken souls finding healing together.

Fun world with interesting story tangled with a dull romance between two middle aged adults who can't seem to say "I like you...like, like like you." *Suggestive eyebrow waggle*

This was my first T. Kingfisher book and I'm definitely hungry for more! The story was such a great slow burn and the premise was something I've not done across before. Definitely one to devour if you enjoy grim-dark fantasy.
