About this audiobook

Austin Fletcher, a disturbed young Vietnam War vet, is willed a small house deep in the woods of northern Maine. He comes to own it by the generosity of a brother-in-arms-a fellow soldier and confidante, Maynard Whittier, killed in action by a wayward mortar shell. The rugged landscape of Maine is an intoxicating blend of claustrophobic interiors and endless frozen wastelands. Little by little, the mysterious force in the house asserts itself until Austin isn't exactly sure what is in his mind and what is real. And just when our hero's had enough and is ready to quit the place, a blizzard arrives and the real haunting begins.

I enjoyed the story and characters (except the lead felt he was too short tempered and ungrateful) with the Maine attitudes and way of speaking. Reminds me of most of Kings Maine books. Though not very scary or thrilling. More so a Ghost story. Warning: There is some pedophile stuff here.

Having never read this book when it was originally published in 1980; I knew that it was considered a 'literary classic' but never really understanding why it was talked of this way. Knowing the story of a 23 year old Viet Nam soldier who is left the house of a fellow soldier to him in the mans will, is a story unlike I have ever read before. Though called a horror ghost story.....it was a beautifully narrated one that I will remember forever.

Written from the same author of the classic; 'Summer of '42' this is one I would recommend to anyone that loves a good story. I would not say that this is a scary book, or even fast moving, but it is a book that I think everyone should read. Though there are parts that made me cry in sadness.....I will always remember 'Maynards House'. Enjoyed this immensely.

5 stars all the way up.
