About this audiobook

Charlotte Dean enjoys nothing more than the solitude of her London flat and the monotonous days of her work at a travel bookshop. But when her younger sister unceremoniously bursts into her quiet life one afternoon, Charlotte's world turns topsy-turvy. Beloved author D. E. Stevenson captures the intricacies of post-World War I England with a light, comic touch that perfectly embodies the spirit of the time. Alternatively heart-breaking and witty, The Young Clementina is a touching tale of love, loss, and redemption through friendship.

Having read or listened to nearly all of the Ms Stevenson’s books to me this is one of her best although not everyone agrees of course. Unusual premise in the first part of the book but an overall engaging story that ends well. And an excellent narration by Karen Cass. I think it would have been better had the original title been retained which was Miss Deans Dilemma rather than changing it to what it is now as that is really misleading.

How to say enough without saying too much? I will try. Charlotte is a lovely heroine that spends her growing up years with Garth. That love ripens into true love and a promise to marry once the Great War is over. Enter a younger sister named Kitty who is spiteful and selfish to the bone. Fast forward and the war is over and before Char knows what has happened Garth is an embittered man and married to selfish Kitty. I won't spoil the story by telling more but I will say this was a heartbreaking story to listen to and was only redeemed by getting Garth's POV and the ending. Wish there had been more than the quick ending.
