About this audiobook
Dori Sanders' first novel, Clover, won her the coveted Lillian Smith Award, a Walt Disney movie option, and an appearance on NBC's Sunday Today. Now her eagerly awaited second novel takes her readers to rural South Carolina again for a gentle and wise look at the lives of everyday people, black and white. The only child of tenant farmers, Mae Lee Barnes marries young and saves her wages from the munitions factory to buy a farm. When her husband returns from World War II, he can't keep a job, disappears for weeks at a time, and finally leaves Mae Lee alone to raise five children and run the farm. Being the proud and indomitable woman that she is, Mae Lee transforms her life through the years to meet the vagaries of fortune and the changing times. A perfect blend of comedy and pathos, Her Own Place is a journey of mind and heart. The talent of narrator Kim Staunton makes it a story to be savored and enjoyed.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5GENRE: Historical Fiction, African AmericanSETTING: post WWII; farm land in rural South Carolina CENTRAL FEMALE CHARACTER: MAE LEE BARNES: hard working; persistent; a survivor; a mother full of love and her FIVE (5) CHILDRENSYNOPSISShe was left to raise her children on the large acre farm. This story is about a woman who worked hard and went on to see her children succeed and some to college. WHAT I LIKED: Her reaction to losing her money. And, Lest We Forget and many have. Always a historical reminderWHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Some parts of the book were a little slow in the pace of events.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed this gem of a book. It is a story of a wonderfully, strong woman Mae Lee. With all the hoopla over "The Help" this is another take on the lives of whites and blacks living together in small communities. This is a feel good book and an easy read. I am looking forward to reading her 1st book "Clover" and hope Dori will bless us with another book soon.
