About this audiobook
Reese Duncan wanted a wife, pure and simple. Someone to have children with, someone to help him rebuild his ranch, someone uncomplicated...and someone very different from his first wife, the woman who'd destroyed his life. But he hadn't bargained on Madelyn Patterson. She was sophisticated and citified, and she was willing to herd cattle, keep house and start a family with Reese. The only thing she asked for in return was love - the one thing Reese refused to guarantee.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5First written in 1990, cell phones were noticeably absent from this story. That being said, this was still an entertaining story that did not feel old fashioned. The plot moves at a very realistic pace. Review based on ARC provided by Edelweiss.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I enjoyed this over-the-top contemporary romance with the alpha-male Reece and superwoman Maddie. I loved the banter, especially when they did the "top this strange fact" game. Of course, Reece was an idiot, and Maddie was likable, but not very believable. I mean, how many people who've never done it can pluck and butcher a chicken without help or instruction? And she happens to be a stellar cook of good old-fashioned farm food, mends, cleans and...wait for it.... scraps and paints the outside of the four-bedroom house! By herself! All that and multiple orgasms with a super-stud cowboy...I want to be Maddie when I grow up!!
In addition, I really like this book. I love the mail order bride theme. The characterization of both the hero and the heroine is very full and complete. LH is a prime example of showing not telling. By the actions and words of the characters, you know who they are. Reece is embittered and needs Maddie to help him live again. Maddie is a very different character. I love the way she seems to stroll through life while really getting a lot of stuff done. Her calm nonchalant character is very different from most romantic heroines. Just a good solid romance with no wrong notes. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very enjoyable story about a modern day marriage of convenience that included some exciting battles with the elements. I liked how the romance developed especially the heroine's attitude. Montana rancher Reese advertised for a wife and Madelyn was one of the few who responded.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is such a great story. Reese spends most of the book acting like an idiot ( a hot one), but Madelyn saves it. She's a wonderful heroine, strong, smart and capable of handling an alpha-hole like Reese.
Recommended reading for anyone who wants a strong female lead. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Cross one sophisticated, slow-moving Southern lady with a blunt, hard-working, suspicious Montana rancher, and what do you get? Sparks. The premise may be a bit dated, but Madelyn and Reese are still perfect for one another.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I love this book and have kept it since it first came out. A nice play with the mail order bride, embittered Reese just wants a wife, but Maddie is more than he bargained for. It's wonderfully sensual and it also has an emotional core. I believed in these characters and believed in their love. So it's a keeper and a reread for me. Vintage, excellent Howard.
