- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I tried to get into this book and failed. I think part of the problem might be that I've not read any of the other books in the series and so was lost from the get-go about what was transpiring. The other problem was there are two or three different storylines running all at once, and while I don't normally have an issue with following multiple plot lines, the set-up for these was very, very confusing. I didn't feel connected to the characters at all.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What's not to like when an author essentially warns you up front not to take the book too seriously and just enjoy it for the brain candy that it is? If you're looking for a deep experience, then you probably want to go elsewhere, but if you're looking to be entertained, then by all means, read on.This is part of the Accidentally Yours series, and I haven't read any of the previous books. However, I think the author did a decent job of filling you in on what you may have missed in those prior volumes. Based on this one, it seems that each volume focuses on a primary character and setting that character up with his/her soul mate, with a backdrop of an impending apocalypse and deity shenanigans. This time, the focus is on Ixtab, who has the misfortune to be the Goddess of Suicide. She can't touch anyone without disastrous consequences--they immediately use whatever means is handy to do themselves in. (Be forewarned--cute, cuddly pets are no exception!) As a penance for accidentally killing the love of her life, she wears a veil and hides her beauty, so everyone things she must be a monster inside and out. However, we discover that there's more to the Goddess of Suicide than meets the eye. She is charged with insuring that physicist Antonio Acero, who happens to be the spitting image of her lost love, unlocks the secrets of an ancient Mayan artifact that can help rescue some imprisoned deities. Meanwhile, the other deities, who really resemble a group of kids at daycare in terms of their maturity level, have their little spats and relationship crises. There is one goddess, Cimil, who seems to be quite the trouble-maker, but anyone with a pet unicorn can't be all bad, can they?I laughed quite a bit while I was reading this book, largely at the silliness of it all. If you're a fan of paranormal romance, you'll find a lot to like here between the gods, ex-gods, vampires, fallen angels, etc., etc., that populate the series. Good luck pronouncing the characters' names, though. No wonder they all have nicknames. While not jumping to the top of my "to read" list, the rest of the series will definitely be on my list for the future whenever I need a quick, funny read.
