The Michigan defensive line, instrumental in pressuring Washington, recorded two interceptions, a sack for loss, and an impressive 59 total tackles, limiting the Huskies to 301 total yards—fewer than Michigan's rushing yardage alone, which reached 303 yards.
Michael Penix Jr., who previously boasted a 66.7% completion rate and averaged 332 passing yards per game, struggled in the national final, completing just 53% of his passes and finishing with an efficiency rating of 93.6, accumulating 255 passing yards. Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy showcased both his arm and legs, throwing for 140 yards and executing his longest carry of the season at 22 yards during a crucial third-and-long in the third quarter.
Defensive back Will Johnson, with a third-quarter interception and four tackles, earned the title of Defensive MVP, while Blake Corum, wearing the same jersey number (No. 2) as Johnson, clinched Offensive MVP. Corum's exceptional performance included 134 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, marking his 58th career touchdown—a school record. Head coach Jim Harbaugh, in his 9th season at his alma mater, celebrated his first national championship with the Wolverines. This victory also marks the conclusion of the 10-year tenure of the four-team College Football Playoff, as the playoffs are set to expand to 12 teams for the 2024-25 season.
