The Miami Hurricanes defense had too many “soft spots” in their season opener against Bethune-Cookman. Head Coach Mario Cristobal said, “In practice we were closing on stuff a lot quicker.” Cristobal was critical about the lack of quarterback containment that led to some big plays, but was optimistic that every issue is fixable. Coach Cristobal and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele were complimentary of defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor, linebacker Corey Flagg and defensive tackle Darrell Jackson. 
Coach Steele described Miami’s upcoming challenge in defending Southern Miss star running back Frank Gore Jr. this Saturday. Southern Miss presents many offensive challenges as a team that basically runs three separate offensive systems.
