Description
When Zaynab Issa was younger, she loved watching TV and flipping between the Food Network and the Disney Channel. Eventually, Ina, Giada, and Rachael won out, but it would be years before Zaynab followed her heart and pursued a culinary career. Eventually, a college project turned into a recipe zine and Zaynab went on to work at BuzzFeed and Bon Appetit. Today, she’s a freelance recipe developer and influencer and is working on her debut cookbook, set to be published in 2025. Host Abena Anim-Somuah talks to Zaynab about family, career, life as a third-culture kid, and the project close to her heart—the Taste,Good initiative that brings people together over meals to support various charities. Also, don’t miss Zaynab’s Future Flash Five predictions and her voicemail to her future self.Thank you to Kerrygold for supporting our show. Stacey Mei Yan Fong Of 50 Pies 50 States: The Future Is Pielicious: Hosted by Abena Anim-Somuah Produced by Kerry Diamond and Catherine Baker Edited by Jenna Sadhu Recorded at CityVox Studios This week, we look into the future with Stacey Mei Yan Fong, baker, designer, and general manager of the Big Night dinner party essentials shop in Brooklyn. Stacey was feeling “lost in the sauce,” as she puts it, and living in NYC, far away from her native Hong Kong, when she started her ambitious project to bake 50 pies, each representing a different state. Fast forward, her passion project has been turned into a book—50 Pies 50 States: An Immigrant’s Love Letter To The United States Through Pie—that will be published on June 13th. Stacey also talks with host Abena Anim-Somuah about her time in Savannah, where she attended SCAD; the influence of Entenmann’s; cooking her way through the Four & 20 Blackbirds cookbook; the bright side of commuting; and her true love, Dolly Parton.
