Description

You can take control of your life, heal from burnout, and thrive in our broken medical system. It sounds impossible, but Dr. Jimmy Turner joins me to talk about how he helps his clients heal from or overcome burnout, achieve financial freedom, and thrive.   The ABCs of Self Determination Autonomy Belonging Competence   About Dr. Jimmy Turner Dr. Jimmy Turner is an academic anesthesiologist, self-proclaimed money nerd, and certified coach for physicians.  He hosts The Physician Philosopher podcast and is the author of Determined: How Burned Out Doctors Can Thrive in a Broken Medical System.  Jimmy's passion is teaching doctors how to create the time, financial freedom, and mindset shifts they need to create a life they love, which he does through books, podcasts, and his coaching program called the Alpha Coaching Experience.   Thriving in a Broken Medical System Most physicians will experience burnout at some point in their careers, but it’s less common for male physicians to speak about it. Dr. Jimmy Turner speaks about how you can approach a male physician in your life if you suspect they’re reaching burnout. Jimmy also breaks down the ABCs of determination theory, essentially saying that if you can control these elements, you can take control of your life and change it without needing the broken medical system to change.  Because our medical system is broken, it is possible to thrive in it. Jimmy explains the mindset shifts that need to happen at the start of your journey so that you can learn to thrive.   Move Beyond Learned Helplessness We talk about the concept of learned helplessness. Jimmy shares a great example of German Shepherds experiencing learned helplessness and makes the connection with our own responses. We can all move past the learned helplessness in our lives; we don’t need to accept the circumstances. We also talk about moral injury and how our responses to what goes on in a medical setting can impact our life. Finally, Jimmy shares some of the ways he helps his clients diagnose the root cause of their burnout. We end this conversation by talking about how physicians can achieve financial freedom. What is your relationship to burnout? How do you balance your career with the other things that are important to you? There’s this huge stigma, people feel broken, and they don’t want to ask for help because, in medicine, we literally say that asking for help is weakness.” [7:15] “In order for someone to actually change, they have to want the change themselves.” [9:20] “The ABCs of Self Determination, if you can control those things and help create them in your life, you can actually solve your burnout without the system needing to change. It empowers you to take control of all the aspects of your life that are important to you, to love what you’re doing, and have that balance that every doctor wants.” [12:15] “Whether it’s imposter syndrome or honesty with the burnout, we do need to talk about your feelings because your feelings drive everything. They drive your actions, and they drive your results. Because of that, you have to interact with your feelings otherwise, you’ll just try to escape them or buffer them or white knuckle your way through them. We all know that doesn’t work. You end up being just as burned out afterward.” [20:55]   Resources Mentioned Buy Determined: How
