You are who you think you are.
You have probably heard or read this line multiple times, but have you wondered what it truly means?
Everything that happens to us begins with a thought. It could be as simple as what we eat for breakfast or as complex as starting up a business.
Our thoughts are powerful. They can determine how we feel and dictate how we react to situations.
Ironically, while we are flooded with workout and diet options to build up our physical body, we have minimal options for strengthening our thoughts.
Our thoughts can mould our character. It can define the way we live. However, the power of our thoughts can work both ways. It can lead us to a fulfilling life, or it can draw us into desolation.
Why Control Your Thoughts
The thousands of thoughts that run through our minds affect our entire being – our attitude, health, mood, and even relationships.
Unfortunately, not all our thoughts are productive.
The onset of the 21st century brought the world's attention to mental health, with the rising number of reported mental illnesses. As of 2019, an estimated 275 million people have suffered from an anxiety disorder, which leads to excessive worry and fear.
Research shows that 75 to 98 percent of mental illnesses (e.g dementia, depression), physical illnesses (e.g. stroke, epilepsy), and behavioural disorders (e.g. schizophrenia, anorexia) can come from one's thoughts.
Negative thoughts are normal. We all get angry, frustrated, insecure, scared, and worried. But letting these thoughts get out of control to consume us is not normal. It is destructive; it affects even the people around us.
Reining in our thoughts is crucial to putting right the other facets of our lives. We need to get rid of thoughts that waste our time and energy and ruin our healthy relationships.
Faith-based teachings have a lot to say about our thoughts. Some of these teachings are found inappropriate parts of this book.
So, before you proceed, ask yourself: Who do you want to become?
