PREFACE
The Inner Life is a collection of messages delivered by Z.T. Fomum in August 2005 to the church in Bujumbura, focusing on the transformative experience of the new birth and its impact on our inner lives.
The author, Z.T. Fomum, describes being born again as a transformative experience, a surgical operation
performed by the Holy Spirit. This spiritual surgery removes the heart that is inclined toward sin and replaces it with a new one. This new heart brings forth fresh visions, joy, hope, and desires.
The author in these series of messages went beyond the core concept of the new birth, he covered other indispensable themes such as:
The radical change wrought by the Holy Spirit.
Developing a burning passion for Christ and serving others.
Maintaining focus and avoiding distractions on your spiritual journey.
The importance of leadership that serves, not dominates.
Cultivating a deep understanding of Scripture.
Among others
We offer this book with a fervent prayer. May its contents guide you towards a deeper understanding of the new birth and its impact on your inner life. Ultimately, we hope it empowers you to live authentically as a child of God, transformed by this spiritual rebirth.

THE NEW BIRTH
GOD’S SPIRIT AT WORK
The new birth is not personal transformation. It is a transformation from above. The old heart flows out with the old life. The new heart flows out with new life. In the new birth, in a split second, God takes away the old heart and replaces it with a new heart.
The Bible says,
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols (Ezekiel 36:25).
It is God doing it:
I will give you a new heart.
I will put a new spirit.
I will remove from you.
These series of actions result in the new birth. The new birth is cardiac operation conducted by the Holy Spirit in which the heart that loves sin is removed. The heart that loves the world is removed. The heart that loves disobedience is removed.
It is radical surgery, carried out by the Holy Spirit. There are many people in the churches who love the world very dearly and they are struggling to put away what they love. Their hearts love the world, the things of the world, the values of the world, but they remember what is said in church and try to put away what they love.
The honour of the world is a delight to them. The pride of life is full. They are not converted. They have not received the new birth. It is not personal modification. It is radical transformation. It is done from above so that in one split second you hate the things that you loved. One second before you are saved, you love the world and immorality makes sense to you. In a split second, a spark is ignited in your heart and every beautiful woman becomes hopelessly ugly. There is no place in your heart for them. All the money of the world becomes useless to you; you are made humble as an overflow. It is something that God carries out. It is a work of God not of man.
IT IS A WORK OF GOD
I want to ask you, in the depth of your heart, do you say you are born again? You wanted a big name in the world, now you want a big name in church—only the platform has changed. There is a song that says that everything has changed with the coming of Jesus in my life.
The new heart flows out with new visions, new joys, new hopes. Many people say, I was born again on this day,
but they are the same old people in the depths of their hearts with the same tastes, same desires, same looks, same disposition in the heart.
But when Jesus comes in, it is a mighty coup d’état from heaven. The first thing that changes is the heart. You say that you have received Jesus; has your heart changed? Does the Holy Spirit witness and say that it is a new heart? What has changed? The Lord gives the new heart to those who ask Him. Do you want the new heart?
The miracle of the new birth is as dramatic as that of a blind seeing, a deaf hearing.
Do you want the new heart? Are you ready to obey God at any cost, so that when He says, Yes
, it is yes, and No
, it is no?
Pray:
Lord of heaven, I was born with the old heart, and I have lived with that old heart. I have done a lot on my own to change my heart, but my heart has lied. I have struggled this way for long. My Lord, you sent Jesus Christ from heaven, and He died on the cross and shed His blood to make it possible for the new heart to be given to me on His merit. Lord, take away the old heart from me now. Take away the old heart with all its desires, all its attributes, all its tastes and all its values. Uproot the old heart out of me. Uproot it, uproot it, and uproot it. I do not want its products, Lord. I hate the products of the old heart. I do not want the products of the old heart. Whatever gain or pleasures the world gave, I regret them. Whatever security they brought to me; I reject them. Take it out of me, take it out of me. Thank You, Lord, that You have taken away the old heart. O Lord, in the name of the Lord Jesus, give me the new heart now. I receive the new heart that You are giving me now by faith. Oh, by faith, my Lord, I receive You Jesus. Come in Jesus, in all Your fullness. Possess me. Holy Spirit, come right now into my new heart. Come, come, come and possess my new heart. Holy Spirit, fill my new heart so that I will live my new life in the power of the Holy Spirit, so that the entire new life will be lived and will blossom in the power of the Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus, I receive the change. My pride is gone. I am a new man with a new heart. Everything has changed because of the new heart.
Place your hand on your head!
Say:
Lord, cause the Holy Spirit to fall upon me now bringing healing power into me. O Lord, open the heavens and pour your Spirit upon me now. Thank You, Jesus, thank You, Jesus, all has changed.
I owe you the responsibility of labouring in prayer that you may have your names clearly written in the book of life. The evangelist is there to ensure that people not only come to the Lord, but that there is growth. I am going to ensure that each person is prayed for 100 times.
By midnight the typed names must be at the pastor’s home. The first 24 hours are critical.
If you have your name on the list, make sure you are here tomorrow, morning and evening. You have received a new heart. You need to be taken care of. Tomorrow morning and evening you shall be here. We shall teach you how to
