A Look into the World of Emotions
Been studying human emotions for years. You aren't fooling me.
I know at times you feel:
Overly anxious.
Overly unsure.
Overly paranoid.
Want to know something?
So do 7 billion other people on this planet. Your feelings are normal. Don't be so hard on yourself.
At ease.
'Can you expand a little? Why am I feeling like this?'
I will expand. Once you understand some fundamental emotional intelligence concepts, your life will seem to make more sense.
Remember, you're an emotional creature at the core, so you need to take this subject seriously.
Analogy time.
Look up.
The blue sky is your natural state. Most peoples natural state, believe it or not, is at peace.
The clouds are your fleeting emotions. These emotions consist of nervousness, anxiety, stress etc.
'Fleeting?'
Yep. These emotions are temporary.
Some people have more clouds than someone else. They have soo many clouds, that they begin to believe that stress, anxiety, nervousness is their natural state. You may be one of them.
But that is incorrect.
'So I'm naturally calm?'
Ya. You just need to reduce the clouds..
Reducing the clouds starts off with educating yourself about emotions in the first place. Society as labeled emotions as 'soft' which is why many neglect this topic.
But the more uninformed you are, the more harm that you unwillingly do to your internal world.
Which is why I have been pushing the EQ movement on this platform. People who do not take EQ seriously have contacted me saying how I have strangely been describing everything they are feeling in some tweets. Why? It's because emotions are universal & have similar principles.
I will not give you a huge lecture on emotional intelligence at the moment. But I want you to pick up a few concepts that can help you out next time you are going thru a dark moment. These concepts have helped me in the past, so go on & give it a try.
1. All emotions are fleeting
This ties back into my cloud analogy. But if you can really let this principle sink in, you will gain massive control over your life. No matter how bad you are feeling now, it's not permanent. It will go away.
This concept is important because you have probably lost several opportunities in life due to temporary emotions.
'Example?'
Public speaking. People are so terrified of that initial emotion, that they never even start. Even though that emotion melts once you begin talking.
2. Breath
Your breath is your best friend when you are being slapped with the dark clouds. When you feel a burst of anxiety, chances are that you will spend a lot of time in your head. But your breath will guide you back to the present. Learn to control your breath.
Try Ninja Breaths.
NINJA BREATHS:
Breathe in & out thru your nose.
Should be silent.
If you hear noise, you are doing it wrong.
You will silence your breath by slowing down.
Once 'silent mode' is activated, you have achieved deep breathing.
Diaphragm is now engaged.
Shallow breaths no more.
3. Feel & Release
Once your breath has bought your focus from your head to the present moment, it's time to get to work.
'Like watch Orange is the new black?'
No fool! We are now going to have you feel the physical sensations. A technique called the feel & release.
'Huh?'
In order to truly gain full control over your emotions, this step is a MUST. Most of you guys do a technique called the 'hide & suppress.'
Whenever you feel a burst of anxiety, then first thing you do is pull out your phone, drink, smoke weed, watch TV etc. Very bad....
'Why bad?'
Because a negative emotion that is buried goes to the gym & comes back 10x stronger. Resulting in more dark clouds in your life. Is that what you want? Well?!
'No no.. I don't want that. Please explain your method.'
Ok so no more suppressing. Bring in awareness!
Next time you feel negative emotions, immediately identify which body parts are tightening, where it feels warm, and any tingle. You are now actually feeling the emotions.
Take some time to just sit with them & observe. Believe it or not, this is very therapeutic.
Take all the time you need to physically feel the sensations. As you are feeling it, you will notice something.
'What?'
The tightening of that muscle will begin to stop. It will go away within a few minutes. You have just released the sensation.
You felt & released.
The feel & release technique does 2 things.
1. You are now more aware of your emotions & impulses.
2. You understand that emotions really are temporary. Making these realizations will have you feeling at peace.
The dark clouds will take a back seat.
The sky will now shine.
Take some time to review these steps again & try it out next time out feel out of it.
You will be happy to understand that dark emotions are not the boogeyman.
Simply momentary clouds floating by.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Let me clear up the misconception.
Emotional intelligence is not about discussing your feelings in a circle & crying all day. The baby brains do not understand this.
'So what is it then?'
Emotional intelligence is when your mind has mastery & understanding over your emotions.
'What happens if I refuse to become emotionally intelligent?'
You will rot.
'Really??'
Ya. WAKE UP. Don't you see what's happening? You are an emotional creature at the core, not a logical one.
'But my mommy said I was logical tho!'
And your mommy misinformed you
Your emotional brain processes information BEFORE your logical brain.
'Hm...any examples?'
Think about sales.
Anyone who is an excellent marketer will tell you that people buy the feelings associated with the product, then justify it with logic.
'Really? I could have sworn it was the other way around.'
Nah. Let me dig a little deeper into this example.
I've worked as an electrical engineer for many years in my life. And I can name 10 different laptops that are better than the Mac.
But if you are an Apple fan, all the facts that I'm throwing at you about RAM, processing speed, operating system will fly over your head.
All you care about is the feeling that the Apple brand provides for you.
'Whoa. You're right!'
And this is just one of many examples of how you feel first than think after.
Making this understanding will change your view on life FOREVER. Don't you see? True intelligence is when your mind has power over your emotions. You are no longer the impulsive creature that blindly follows disruptive emotions.
When your mind has a clear understanding of your internal world, you will feel free. Only then will anxiety, sadness, anger etc make much more sense.
Once you understand your internal world, now you can understand someone else's internal world. Empathy 101.
Life is renovated.
Emotional Literacy
The more emotionally intelligent you become, the more you will realize words like sad, mad, happy etc.. are just the first level.
You will soon realize that you can feel:
Sad & happy.
Excited and nervous.
Depressed & hopeful.
Be able to identify the emotional nuances.
The terms 'happy', 'sad', 'angry' etc. are all terms created by society. Our ancestors did not stop everything and tell their fellow tribesman:
'Hey I want to hunt that animal, but I feel scared'
They just felt their emotion Which is what you must do. Here's how....
I have recommended these books before & I will do so again. These are essential for a core understanding of emotional principles:
'Emotional Intelligence' by Daniel Goleman
'Emotional Intelligence 2.0' by Travis Bradberry
'How emotions are made' by Lisa Feldman Barrett
Done reading them?
'Yessir'
Okay cool. Now I want you to read a few articles about 'Emotional Literacy' on Google. I read the top 15 articles and felt caught up. You can go ahead and do the same. Once complete you can begin applying. That's where the fun begins.
'Uh... how do I apply?'
Good question 2 methods
1. Traditional journaling
Put the feelings into words. The more words you can use the better. Remember, you are identifying the nuances. So peel back the layers & you will discover many insights about yourself.
2. Mindful body meditation
This requires you to sit with your emotions. Instead of focusing on your breath, I want you to focus on the sensations of your body Identify which parts of your body heats up, shrivels, tenses up etc. Be like your ancestors and feel the energy.
So step 1, you are putting words to your emotions.
Step 2, you are legitimately feeling out your emotions, no words.
Keep doing these steps for a few months You will sharpen your emotional literacy skills. This is a very powerful skill set to have in life.
Once you are becoming emotionally literate, you are not going to panic as much. You are going to be much more aware of your internal world. Within 3-4 months, you will view emotions as our primal ancestors did:
E-Motion = Energy in motion
Harness the energy.
Once you are able to harness your energy at will, you will become limitless. You just need your mind & energy on your side. So read, learn & apply! And watch your life clarify.
Emotional Currency
Stop.
VERY IMPORTANT.
Money is no longer the most important currency.
Emotional currency is now the most important.
Know who to
