Introduction
Do you know what’s awkward?
When you are texting someone and pouring your heart into it.
You’re trying to impress the other person.
This is one of those high stakes conversations.
Thus far, the conversation has been going well.
However, you’re not at the stage where you can relax. Instead, you think at any moment... this person will stop responding.
So, you’re stepping up the entertainment game some more.
Text after text.
Everything is going smoothly.
One day, you decide to take the foot off the gas pedal just a little.
So you give a nonchalant message. There is humor in it, but it’s not your best.
The response from the other end?
Lol.
Some of you reading this may be like:
‘What’s so bad about that? The other person found whatever you said to be funny.’
But another group of people is like:
‘Geez. That’s bad!’
A simple Lol without any follow up indicates:
‘I’m done with this conversation. I did not have enough time to keep the conversation going. By the way, I wasn’t even laughing! I’m just glad that this interaction is finally over.’
Okay, maybe I’m being a bit too dramatic. But I’m sure you see where I’m coming from.
A digital lol is very painful.
However, a physical lol is one of the most empowering feelings out there.
Lol.
