    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

There are so many people who deserve credit for this book. At the top of the list is my grandmother who named me Mama Maendeleo. While I could not understand what maendeleo I was being credited with, or was being prophesied about, I am grateful for every prayer that got me here. She is quickly followed by my mother who wanted me to join a writing guild based in London while I was in primary school. I guess she could see something I was not ready to see. So much so that she kept cutting out and handing me the same advertisement from the newspaper year after year. Right next to her is my father who said no to things I had no business asking for in the first place and said yes to all the things that solidified my trajectory. Then there are my siblings who have been my comfort zone my entire life. The ones who help me take the blinders off. Sometimes gently, mostly firmly, always with love. Not to be forgotten are the ladies at Bible study who held me up, prayed for me, read the first draft, and gave me the courage to keep going. Michele who sat with me in a coffee shop, listened attentively as I poured my heart out and then stuck around to watch the story unfold. Cheryl who did not even know she was changing my world, but she did. Everyone who witnessed the mess I was making of my life and chose to love me through it anyway. I thank God for each of you. Thank you for choosing me, especially when I did not know if I was worth choosing. I love you.

    PREFACE

    Hello there, friend.

First, please allow me to express my gratitude to you and this unique way we are connecting. Yes, I understand that meeting within the pages of a book might not seem so unusual if you are an avid reader; however, for this first-time author, it is so surreal - yet here we are! I am genuinely glad we will become friends as you read this book. I have been praying for you, and I believe that your choice to pick up this book is not a coincidence. As Isaiah 43:19 (NIV) suggests, God is initiating a new chapter in your life, and I am excited to meet you in person someday and hear all about it.

In my experience, the journey toward faith and healing is far from linear. Recently, familiar symptoms have reappeared. These symptoms are indicators of the place I find myself in now, where I am not at my best. The physical symptoms have also been compounded by witnessing fellow brothers and sisters in the global community endure agonising experiences. Despite not feeling great physically, mentally, spiritually, or even emotionally, where I am today is much better than where I used to be. This substantial improvement in my overall well-being has compelled me to pick up the proverbial pen, write, and focus my attention on the goodness of God.

You see, life does not promise constant sunshine and roses. In John 16:33 (NIV), the Bible candidly talks about the fact that we will encounter challenges in this world. Yet, it does not leave us hanging there. The good news is that Jesus has already overcome the world and encourages us to take heart.

    As you read, please remember:

28905.jpg No two stories are identical. We all possess unique ingredients that flavour our individual lives.

28905.jpg Although the telling might convey simplicity, nothing written here aims to oversimplify complex matters.

28905.jpg God’s sovereignty reigns overall. My story would not be worth telling if it had not been intricately woven by the Master.

28905.jpg Every step in your life holds purpose and meaning, even if it is not clear right now.

28905.jpg Take heart, for the battle has already been won.

This book is tailored to you if:

28905.jpg You grapple with chronic illness and contemplate the potential for healing.

28905.jpg You confront recurring health challenges and consider connecting with God.

28905.jpg You have witnessed loved ones facing health struggles and seek ways to uplift them in their faith.

28905.jpg You are highly affected by the less-than-positive things we encounter in our world.

28905.jpg You are a mental health practitioner, and you are looking to support your clients who are dealing with mental health issues that arise from experiencing trauma.

28905.jpg You are a caregiver to a loved one who is fighting an impossible battle.

28905.jpg You suspect a misdiagnosis and are unsure where to turn for assistance.

28905.jpg You have exhausted every medical option available and feel a sense of personal failure due to the lack of progress.

28905.jpg You strive to maintain faith, but your journey has left you feeling burnt out, impacting your relationship with God.

28905.jpg Your Christian community feels almost absent, even though you are surrounded by well-meaning
