    Breaking the Ice

We’ve all found ourselves in an awkward situation where we have no idea how to start a conversation organically. The more time passes, the more awkward it is to try and break the ice. Utilizing small talk is a quick and easy way to break the ice naturally. You’re able to break that deafening silence and instigate conversation.

    Creating Valuable Connections

You never know how valuable someone could be in your life until you reach out to them. We are often too fearful to approach individuals we don’t know, as we find it too and scary to start conversation. You may be sitting next to someone in a library, and they look like a fun individual you want to get to know, or you are in the workplace and there’s a specific person you’ve always wanted to become friends with. Although you want to reach out to these people and form connections, you don’t know how to accomplish it.

When you use small talk, you will find that it’s a lot easier to get out of your comfort zone and form these valuable connections. You’re able to start a conversation with the interesting looking person next to you in the grocery store, and you can end up building valuable connections. Who knows, maybe you make a connection with someone who could be valuable for your career, or you form a relationship with someone who becomes your best friend.

    Finding Common Ground

Small talk is a valuable way to help you get closer to people, as you find common ground. This is especially effective if you’re conversing with someone you don’t know, as you may have no idea where to start with conversation. You don’t know what this other person’s interests are and how you can start communicating comfortably with each other.

It can be challenging to find common ground with someone through casual conversation, but small talk allows you to discuss common topics. For example, you may talk about a situation that you’re witnessing in front of you. You may find this helps you to hear their opinion about the situation, which may be similar to yours. You then know that you both relate on something.

    The Seven Principles of Dialogue

Before you learn how to use small talk in your everyday life, you need to be able to conquer these principles first. Small talk is more than just talking about the weather, as it can be a lot more meaningful when you consider the principles of it.
