Gunomoy stared at his phone in puzzlement. He had just dialed his own number as a joke, expecting it to ring endlessly in an unresolved loop. But someone had picked up.
Hello?
came a man's voice through the receiver. It wasn't Gunomoy's voice though. Deep and gravelly, it sent an uneasy chill down his spine.
Who is this?
Gunomoy asked, his own voice coming out far more shakily than he intended.
A low chuckle sounded from the other end. The question is, who are you? And how did you get this number?
Gunomoy's mind raced. This had to be some kind of mistake. Maybe a crossed wire, or a phone stolen with the previous owner's number still attached. I think there's been a mix up. I dialed my own number by accident.
And what number is that?
Gunomoy hesitated, not wanting to give out his information to a stranger. But something told him hanging up now would be a very bad idea. Playing along cautiously, he recited his mobile number.
More chilling laughter. No, that's not possible. You see, this is my number. And I'm the only one who's ever had it.
